Jake
I was beyond tired when I finally fell onto my bed. There’d been a meeting called by the Dean earlier in the day. He’d told us about a student being attacked and hospitalized and I’d immediately looked over at Wesley. His face had turned a frightening shade of ash grey. He kept his eyes straight ahead on the Dean, refusing to look at any of us as the Dean urged any of us with information to go to him and the police.
“Wesley,” my tone was hushed as I leaned over to speak into his ear. “You need to talk to them. It’s probably the same person or people who attacked you. The situation has clearly escalated and the next time they may not stop until they’ve killed someone.”
He still refused to look at me or acknowledge my words. I grew more frustrated with him as the meeting went on. The student hadn’t been named but whispers were starting to make the rounds of the auditorium.
“I heard it was Robert Bingham. My friend Lance lives in the same building as him. He said his roommates best friend was one of the ones who found him. He was covered in blood and the paramedics had to splint his arm before they moved him.” This was from a guy sitting in front of us.
I wasn’t familiar with Robert Bingham, I didn’t know what he looked like or if he was even in any of my classes. Wesley had an unexpected reaction to the name. He shrank into himself and his eyes started darting around like they had after his attack.
“Wesley?” I whispered, “Do you know Robert Bingham?” I watched my friend curl around himself even more if that were possible. I was now convinced that Wesley knew the boy but I was stunned that he was still unwilling to step forward with what he knew. “Damn it Wes, you need to tell them what you know. It could be any of us next, do you want to live with knowing that you allowed someone else to be hurt? Maybe even one of your friends?”
It was a low blow and I was sickened at having to stoop so low but I knew that it was a real possibility. Wesley needed to say something. I watched him turn to me with frightened eyes and I could have sworn that he was about to relent. Then something over my shoulder seemed to catch his eye and his eyes widened further with terror. Cold, soul deep terror. And then he turned away from me and slid down the bleacher further away from me.
I turned and looked in the general direction that his eyes had taken but I could see nothing out of the ordinary. There were a couple of students sitting behind me but they were chatting between themselves and seemed to be just as worried as everyone else was.
I resigned myself to the fact that I wasn’t going to get anywhere with Wesley right now, but I wasn’t going to just let his wall of silence continue.
After the assembly was finished Wesley vanished and I couldn’t find him anywhere. His roommate said he hadn’t gone back to their room and the others hadn’t seen him either. I phoned Match and filled him in on what had happened. He’s the only one of us not going to the college. He has a job at a law firm near the campus as a legal secretary. I’m not too sure what that entails but he’s talked to his bosses about giving Gerard a job once he finishes his degree.
After calling the others and still not finding Wesley, I decided to just go back to my room. There’s been talk lately about someone new transferring here and if it’s true then I could end up with a roommate. I’ve enjoyed having a room to myself and I’m in no hurry to share. The other guys are always complaining about a lack of privacy and having to jack-off in the showers. I shudder just thinking about it.
