I stare at him in fear. This would be the defining moment, and I can't back down now. No one is here to help me. Just me and Derek.

"What are you waiting for, huh? You've been waiting for this moment your entire life. Come on!" I shout at him, waving my hands in the air.

"Ahh, yes. But one final step before we continue," Derek says. At once, bodies come from every corner of the field, holding the familiar, deadly purple flower.

"Wolfsbane; this time it'll be a fair fight. No shifting, courtesy of the wolfsbane brought so generously by Mrs. Darting before I killed her," Derek curls his lips into a vicious smile. I gulp, letting out a sharp breath.

"Nervous, little sis? I would be too if I were fighting me," he boasts nonchalantly.

"Why are you doing this Derek? You killed my family--our family. My friends, my pack, innocent people. Why?" I walk towards him. "You have no reason to be doing any of this!"

"Yes I do!" He screams at me. "I do! You don't understand what it was like! You were always Daddy's favorite. You could fight, you were a werewolf that was worthy. I'm a human and Dad pretended like I didn't exist!"

"But you mattered to me before you tried to kill me," I whisper.

"And it wasn't enough. Let's see which one is actually worthy now!" He lunges for me unexpectedly and I yelp, tumbling to the ground with him. I push him off of me and I land a punch to his gut, making him gag long enough for me to stand up. I stand up and kick his thigh, hoping to break something. Instead, his leg reacts, shooting forward and knocking me off my feet. We both scramble to our feet, blood from my pack dripping off us.

I roundhouse kick him jaw, causing Derek to stagger back and clutch at his bleeding jaw. He looks at me with fury in his eyes, running towards me with a fist cocked ready to punch me. I side step and put my arm out to flip him. Successfully executing my trick, I stand over his crippled body. He kicks his foot out, fracturing my shin. I scream out in pain, calling for anyone to help me. He stands up, towering over me on the red ground. He pulls a familiar silver knife from his boot and points it at me.

"Play time is up, May. You always were the childish one in the family." The knife glints with the reflection of the sun. I suddenly feel a surge of energy as I feel the wolfsbane scent disappear. I subtly glance around me and the wolfsbane is gone. But before I can shift, he moves the knife back and forward. I gasp, closing my eyes from the pain but it doesn't come. Instead, a small whimper of pain from another wolf. I shift and sink my teeth into Derek's side, tossing him into the mass of bodies. I smile and feel a huge weight lifted from my shoulders.

A small cough brings me back to reality. I shift back and turn to see the wolf that saved me.

"May," a croak. I drop to my knees next to him.

"Jared," I gasp out. "Oh my God, stay still just don't try to sit up." I feel tears falling already.

"No, May, it's fine. I'll be alright."

"No you won't, you got stabbed by a silver knife!" I sob. "Here." I turn him a little to examine the wound. Deep, red, and fatal. There would be no way he would survive this, even by a magical spell or a miracle.

"How is it?" Jared asks, looking up at me.

"Umm," I start, unable to finish, sniffling.

"I won't make it. I just want to tell you I wouldn't take what I did back. You would've died. I know you don't love me, but I will always love you. Only you," he smiles weakly.

"Of course I love you! I will never stop loving you. It just wasn't enough, and I'm sorry. You never gave me a chance to explain, it all just happened so fas-"

"Shush May. I understand," he nods his head, reaching for my hand. I grasp it, interlocking our fingers.

"How did you get past the wolfsbane?" I ask, smiling.

"I don't know, when I heard you scream, all I could think about was getting to you, I think I just chucked it into the forest," he explained, his breath ragged. I grin, tears welling up in my eyes again.

"Tell Lucas he is a lucky guy. He deserves you and you deserve happiness. I'll haunt that little bastard if he hurts you. If he makes you happy, I want him for you. I love you, May. Even though I'm going to die. Forever, even in heaven or hell, wherever I end up. I'm glad the Moon Goddess even gave me a chance with you. So thank you," he whispers.

"I wouldn't of had it any other way. Just please try to fight through it, please, you can't go like this," I sniffle.

"But I feel no pain. I would rather die in your arms saving you than old and without you by my side. I love you. Always." And with that, Jared Loff took his last breath.

I stared at him.

I started to cry.

I sobbed.

I threw myself on top of him, hugging him close to my body so he might just wake up.

"Jared! Wake up, come on!" I shake his body and let my tears fall onto him. "Jared! Jared! Jared. Jared. I love you."
