Chapter 44

*First person pov*

     Time skip one month~

     Bells are ringing in my freaking ears, since the church bell or whatever it is is ringing signalling the Survey Corps is here! It's been a month since I got into the Survey Corps, and Levi's being a real wiener. He's been giving so much cleaning duty, it's bull. Well, I did dug my own grave when I took that dare a few weeks back... I sighed as I sat back on my horse, Jean. "Oi, pay attention brat." Levi hissed at me beside me. "Yeah, yeah, Captain Levi, I got it." I said as I stopped leaning back, but that didn't mean I didn't slouch. "Basil, it's bad to slouch." Petra said from my other side. Me and Petra got really close over the short time we've been together. We're the only girls on the squad so of course we would commune and become best friends instantly... that's how girls work. "We've lured away all the nearby titans!! Thirty seconds until the gates are open!!" A person yelled. "It must be nice... you know, for the titans to leave you alone." Petra said and I glowered at the ground. "It's more of a curse than a blessing, to be honest. I hate the fact that I'm 'Special' and I don't get to be eaten. It's not fair that you guys are risking your lives, while there is just me, I am in no sort of danger. I just want to equal to all of you, the Survey Corps. Besides, it's not fun getting messages about me being a witch." I said as I gripped onto the reins tighter. It's true that I've been receiving hate letters that I'm a witch and I should be burned at the stake. But, I haven't been getting them recently after I told Levi about it. I should thank him for doing that for me after this mission... After this mission... Petra and the other members are going to die... I don't want that. I'm going to do whatever I can to save them. Yeah! I can do it! I can just command the Female Titan to stop! Yeah! "Basil, what are you smiling about? It's cute." Petra said, snapping myself out of my thoughts. "I'm just thinking about the greatest idea in history." I chirped, bouncing a little. "Oh? What that might be?" Petra asked me. I put a finger to my mouth, winking at her. "It's a secret!" I said, giggling. "Ah! You little- I'm going to pry it outta you after this mission!" Petra said in frustration. "It's time!! In mere moments, mankind will advance once more! Show us what you're made of!" A man, most likely a squad leader, yelled. "YEAH!!" We all yelled as we pump our fists or swords in the air. "Open the gate!!" Someone yelled. The gate opens slowly, the bottom had lots of spikes as dirt fell off it. "FORWARD!!!" Erwin yelled and we all rode our horses. My ass is already getting sore, just dandy. This is going be SUCH A FREAKING GREAT EXPEDITION!! NOTE THE SARCASM!! "WE NOW BEGIN THE 57th EXPEDITION!! ADVANCE!!" Erwin yelled as we rode. I look around at all the ruins of Wall Maria. It was even worse when I first got here, it was practically ruins with vines everywhere. "A TEN METER CLASS APPROACHING ON THE FAR LEFT!!" Hanji yelled, and I looked to my left to see a obese titan. "WHILE I'M QUITE INTERESTED IN THE CONTENTS OF IT'S STOMACH, I'LL LEAVE THIS TO THE SUPPORT SQUAD!!" I snort at Hanji's comment. "Hey Basil! Pay attention!" Gunther yelled behind me. "Sorry!" I apologized as we rode. "Senior Oulo, can they... can my comrades beat the titans?" Eren asked Oulo. "Huh? What the hell have you been doing this past month?" Cleaning. I thought bitterly. "Listen, you damn brat. During an expedition, the point is to avoid the titans if possi-" Oulo then bit his tongue and I then laughed. "ASSUME THE LONG-DISTANCE SCOUTING FORMATION!!" Erwin announced and everybody starts to spread out to their formation. I watch as people left, and one by one, it was only the Special Ops squad. "Let's go." Levi announced.

Time skip~

     I anxiously look at all the flares in the sky, searching for that black flare marking Female Titan's entrance. It's been a few hours since we got out here, but we got nothing but red and green flares so far. "Hey Basil," I jumped at the voice and almost fell off of Jean. "Don't do that!" I yelled, holding my heart as I looked at Erd. "Are you okay? You don't look well, you're really pale." Erd pointed out and I laughed nervously. "Ahahaha... I'm fine, I'm fine." I said, waving him off. "What? Did you piss yourself?" Oulo sneered at me and I rolled my eyes. "Please, you probably pissed and shit your pants when you first got out here." I retorted and he scoffed. "And you have no fucking reason to be scared, these titans don't pay any fucking attention to you because you have some sort of 'power'. We're all risking our lives here except for you, you don't have to worry about anything." Oulo hissed at me and I glared at him. "Of course I'm worrying about everything! I'm worrying about everybody's lives! Even your shit life! You all have family and friends to come back to, as do I... and I don't want them to sad and have hatred in their hearts. That's why...! I'm going to protect all the people I can and prevent that from happening!" I finished. "Whoop-dee-fucking-doo, you're going to protect all of us. Good luck with that brat." Oulo said and I glared at him with my visible eye. "Hey Basil." Eren said as he rode up to him and I smiled at him. "Hm?" I hummed in response. "Do you think that everyone's going to be okay?" Eren asked me, looking in the distance of the flares. "I'm sure." I said, then narrowed my eyes at the right flank. There haven't been any red flares in that direction... My breath hitches when a color I didn't want to see slice through the air into the sky... a black flare.
