Dragon's Sadness

.

"Lucy, did I do something wrong to you?" Natsu asked.

Lucy looked over at him, "no."

"Did I eat your food then? Or peek when I wasn't supposed to? Or annoy you?"

"No, not at all."

"Then why have you been giving me this strange look for the past three days?"

Lucy blinked, "look? What look? I don't know what look you're talking about."

"Really? This look." Natsu said.

He lowered his eyebrows a little and relaxed his face, his eyes glowing clear as he lips slowly turned downward. It wasn't a strange, angry look like how Natsu thought it was, no. It was a sad, yearning look. Lucy blushed and looked away, whistling.

"No, no, I don't know that look."

"Hmm, I must have been imagining it then."

"Yup! That's what you were doing, so why don't you go try and beat Papa so we can go on our adventure finally?" Lucy asked.

"Good idea, Father! Let's fight!"

Lucy sighed as he walked away and patted her cheeks. What was with her? Natsu had almost figured it out!... Well maybe not, he almost figured out she was sad, but he wouldn't have figured out that Lucy knew the truth about Igneel leaving them from just her eyes. Lucy didn't know what was wrong with her. She shouldn't be feeling sad for Natsu at all right now. She was going to stay with him when Igneel left and he said so himself that he wasn't going to leave until another year or two... Lucy couldn't remember what time. He said something about a 7 though.

It was just going to be Natsu and Lucy; they weren't going to be alone. She was going to take care of him and they were going to search for their father together. They were always going to be together.

"Why do I feel like this then?" Lucy pouted clenching at her heart.

She wanted to cry every time she thought about Natsu learning Igneel was gone. She couldn't understand why though? Sure it was going to be sad, Lucy herself cried, but for Natsu... for Natsu... Lucy just felt like it was going to be a terrible thing. She looked back and saw Natsu get flicked away by Igneel's tail. He landed on the ground on his feet and Lucy ran over to him. Natsu flamed down when he saw her and got tackled, picking her up so the two of them wouldn't tumble on the ground. Natsu blinked as he put her down, her still hugging him. He looked up at Igneel and he just shrugged.

"Uh, Lucy?" Natsu asked.

"Natsu, know I'm always going to be here okay? I'm never going to leave you." She said pulling away.

Igneel's eyes narrowed as he watched his daughter carefully.

"Okay, thanks?" Natsu asked again.

"We're always going to be together Natsu. I'll never leave you by yourself."

"Um Father? Is this what humans call a proposal?" Natsu asked.

Lucy blushed bright red and smacked his head with all her strength.

"I AM NOT TRYING TO MARRY YOU RIGHT NOW YOU IDIOT!"

"There's my Lucy, AND WHY ARE YOU CALLING ME AN IDIOT?!"

"BECAUSE YOU ARE ONE!"

"WELL AT LEAST I DIDN'T RANDOMLY HUG YOU AND START SAYING WEIRD THINGS, YOU WEIRDO!"

"IDIOT!"

"WEIRDO!"

"IDIOT!"

"WEIRDO!"

The two of them ran out of breath and started panting.

"That's unfair, how come I don't get a nickname?" Igneel asking joining in the fun.

"Fine Papa! You can me PAPA TO THE IDIOT!"

"No, you're FATHER TO THE WEIRDO!"

"PAPA TO THE IDIOT!"

"FATHER TO THE WEIRDO!"

"PAPA TO THE IDIOT!"

"FATHER TO THE WEIRDO!"

The two of them started growling at each other and lunged. Igneel was slightly amused, his daughter's growl had gotten much better. Much, much better. His son has always been impressive but it seems Lucy was finally embracing her inner dragon as she started gnawing on Natsu's arm.

"EW! YOU LICKED ME!"

"WELL YOU'RE AN IDIOT!"

"NO I'M NOT! I CAN COUNT TO A HUNDRED! I KNOW MY ABC'S! I CAN READ! I CAN ADD AND SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE! I KNOW MY MANNERS! I KNOW HOW TO CARRY A LADY! AND I KNOW HOW TO USE MY IMAGINATION!"

Lucy blinked, "ah... that's a very good point."

She was shocked. Natsu smirked all knowing and nodded his head.

"Yup! I'm just like a human now and could be too. If you ever train me Father by dropping me off in the middle of the forest or a human village I could survive both now."

Lucy giggled a little, patting Natsu's head.

"Good work Natsu. There's still many things to learn about humans though, like knowing when to shut up and when to let a lady win an argument."

"You're not a lady though, you're a teacher."

Lucy started giggling and soon Natsu joined her.

"Alright children, come on." Igneel said flapping open his wings.

"Where are we going?" Lucy asked.

"Yeah, where?" Natsu asked.

"A family fly, to clear our heads so you two won't argue again. It'll be fun, I'll even let you jump off Natsu."

"WHOOO!"

"You don't have to Lucy."

"HOORAY!"

"But I can't make any promises that Natsu won't try and make you."

"Forget about that whole speech about never leaving you Natsu, stay far away from me when we're on Papa." Lucy stuck her tongue out at him as she ran towards Igneel.

"Come on Lucy! You liked jumping off the mountain! You'll love this!" Natsu said chasing after her.

There wasn't much time together left with Igneel; he was going to make sure he enjoyed every little second of time with his children because soon...

Soon they won't be sleeping with him under the stars anymore, under his wings or claws for warmth.

Soon they wouldn't be flying through the sky like this, without a care in the world.

Soon they wouldn't be swimming together or catching fish.

Soon they wouldn't be playing games and eating as a family.

Igneel has lived for 700 years and had another good 700 or 1000 on him. A year, a few months, that was nothing compared to his lifespan. Right now though, enjoying the pitter patter of feet on his back... it all felt so short to him.
