Matheus's

His ringing phone wakes him up. Who could this be that couldn't wait for the sun to rise up?

He grabs his phone from his bedside table.

"Hello!" he said drowsily.

"Good morning, Matheus!" greeted the voice from the other line.

"Rafael, what's the emergency that you couldn't wait? It's still very dark," he complained.

"You will thank me after you hear what I have to say," Rafael told him.

"Okay. Then speak!" He commanded.

"Olga called me. She said that Briar is coming to Rio de Janeiro today. She will land later, around six in the evening!" Rafael started.

He sits up and asks him.

"What will she be doing in here?" He asks in confusion.

"She will be the wedding planner for her best friend's wedding," Rafael replied.

"And what can I do about that?" he asks.

"You told me that the name of the man you saw with her that night at Josef's wedding is Miguel, right?" Rafael replied, asking.

"Yes," he replied.

"That Miguel is her best friend since they were five, according to Olga," Rafael said.

"You mean he's not her boyfriend?" He asked as if some heavy object lifted from his chest.

"Yes, my dear friend. So what are you going to do now? Now that you know that Briar is one hundred percent boyfriend-less?" Rafael asks in his teasing voice.

He's so happy. He wants to jump up and down.

"Thank you, Rafael. You mean Olga knows my misery?" he asks.

"I mentioned to her about what happened back in Switzerland," replied Rafael.

"I see," he just said.

He doesn't know whether he gets angry or feels ashamed to his friends.

"Don't get mad, okay? We're just trying to help you. You're not living since that night, Matheus. I just didn't talk, but while on our way back at our hotel, I didn't see the cheerful friend in you. That bothers me. I'm not an expert in advising because I failed too. But I hope that now that you know, you have to gather some courage to pursue the woman you love," Rafael said.

He heaves a sigh; he realises that his friends are there for him. They only wanted him to be okay. He's thankful that they are actually concerned about his well-being.

"Thank you! I'll call you later." And he ended the call.

Rafael was right. He seems that he actually died that night. He couldn't accept that the woman who writes the letter L.O.V.E. in his heart is no longer available. He just acknowledges that word, love, that night when he saw Briar in another man's arms. Every swirl that man gave to Briar was like the thorns that penetrated his heart deeper and deeper. He just watched them; he can't do anything.

For the past two months, he seems to think he's existing because of his businesses. He focused his mind on his businesses. But sometimes at night, there was a moment that he remembered her face.

He thought that maybe because of being ruthless to some women when he was younger, this is the payment. The fate lets him feel the feeling of being hurt like a helpless creature.

He stands up from his bed. He checks the time one more time. It's still very early. How can he go back to sleep now? Even if he went back to sleep, he wouldn't sleep because his mind was occupied by the woman he loved.

Instead of going back to sleep. He decided to take a quick shower and shave. He changed his clothes into something casual. A little rugged maybe. He put on his faded denim pants and paired them with a thin, blue-striped long sleeve and then rolled up half his arms. He wore his black wingtip brogues.

After changing, he opened the cabinet in his wardrobe and keyed in the combination of his safety deposit box. He takes out the box where all the heirloom jewellery of his family is safely kept. He takes out the only one he needed. It's a sapphire stone that's safely held by a tri-colour gold, white, and silver ring.
It's his grandmother's engagement ring. Passed to her mother, and now he's going to give it to his future wife.

Yes, he is going to give it to his future wife; he will do everything to have her.

Many women came and went in his life. But not even one of them has made it to his heart; he didn't feel anything; nothing made his heart beat faster, only lust.

He takes the ring and wraps it in a tissue paper. Then he put back the box in the safety deposit box and closed it. With a ring in his pocket, he glances at his reflection once again in the full-length mirror. He smiled. This is his chance, and he will do his best to win her heart.

He came home in his luxurious mansion at Barra Da Tijuca after the successful tournament in his estate at Sta. Catarina.

It is easier for him to check his office anytime.

And since already dressed, though not for work, he will go to his office first; he wants to check his unfinished works.

From there he will pick up Briar in the airport later.

He opened the door of his mansion to go out. He went to the garage and opened the car. He would be using a brand new Mercedes Benz. He only uses this car when he is in the city.

He used the GMC pickup truck when he went to Sta. Catarina.

He arrives, in his only office, for a few minutes. The roving guard was even surprised to see him parking his car.

After he parked his car, he went up to his office. He made some coffee from the coffee maker he installed in his office. Actually, his secretary is the one making them for him, but since he is alone, he has no choice but to do it by himself.

He made a note and pasted it in his monitor so that he would not forget the time.

He wanted to be there when she arrived; he wanted to be the face she should see when she came out of the arrival area.

He checked the scheduled flight from Switzerland. It says the plane will arrive at six twenty in the evening. Rafael mentioned it, but he just wanted to make sure that he heard it correctly.

It's a long way to be six twenty. He took a deep breath. Because he immersed himself in work. He didn't realise it was already five o'clock.

He quickly saved his work and turned off his computer.

He closed his office door and quickly went to his parked car.

It's the best decision he made because he is near the airport, and he has the ring he was planning to give to the woman. From there it takes only thirty minutes.

He turned on the engine and revved it a few seconds before he drove off.

He arrived at the airport early, so he decided to look for a place to eat with parking space. He drives to terminal two; he knew that there were cafes on the third floor. And he can park in there.

He found the best location to park when he reached the third floor. He will go to the arrival area so that he will be there when she comes out.
