Twenty Three

Matheus

When the woman accompanied Josef and Rafael to the falls, three of them were left standing on the opposite side of the road. He looks around and he admires the beauty of his surroundings. Tall lush trees on both sides of the wide road. Only a few vehicles have passed since they arrived. He could only hear some chirping birds from tall trees and the rushing water from the falls. It's paradise. 

 A moment later a woman who brought Josef and Rafael came out from the venue with another woman.  They are walking towards them. He blinks his eyes if he's not hallucinating. The woman is no other than the woman who occupied his thoughts since the moment he laid his eyes on her. It's Briar.

His heart pounding in his ribcage. He misses her so much. When she's in front of them and she says something, his mind is not functioning.

He heard that his friends were talking to them. They knew her he thought.

Lucas introduced him to her, he doesn't know where he borrowed his strength to speak normally.

"Nice to meet you, Briar." He said

"N-nice to meet you too Mr. Car--- Matheus." She replied.

She's stuttering. He thought. Does she feel the same as he feels? He wondered.

"Gentlemen, this is Jenny, she's my right hand. Jen, these are Lucas, Flavio, and Matheus. We were at the same school in senior high." Briar introduced them to her assistant.

"Nice to meet you, Jenny," Said Lucas and they shook hands

"Likewise, "Jenny replied

He and Flavio did the same.

"Okay, gentlemen follow me to the other side." She said walking past them.

All three of them followed her. She ushered them to fall line on the other side where she came.

"We will wait for your partners to arrive. They will be here soon." She said after 

He just looks at her while she's talking.

"I saw your photo with Josef and Caren in a magazine, it says that you are the best wedding planner here." Lucas started a conversation with Briar.

"No, no, no, there are many best wedding planners here, Lucas; maybe they only wrote that because they will publish it in Brazil." She replied smiling at Lucas

"Well, I guess that what was written is true because, as I can see, this wedding venue is beautiful, and I'm very sure that the reception is also," Lucas replied.

"Thank you!" She replied to Lucas

"What do you think Matheus? This is a beautiful place, right? And Briar is the best wedding planner in Switzerland." Said Lucas looking at him and waiting for his reply.

He just nods at Lucas

"Cat got your tongue buddy?" Flavio responded looking at him

Lucas laughs.

"Hey! No! I'm just thinking of something." He replied in protest

His friends got their chance to tease him, but suddenly, there was a car stop from across the road, so their eyes turned to the car.

"Here they are," Briar said, looking at the women emerging from the car.

Jenny crosses the road to meet the newcomers and then accompanies them to fall in line with them.

 A moment later, when the bridal car arrived, she instructed her assistant that it was ready to start.

His mind is not on the occasion but on Briar. When his partner hooks her hand in his arms, he jolts. He wished that it was Briar, not this woman. He didn't even know her name.

The woman smiled. "I'm Tanya."

"Matheus." He said. And focused his eyes on the path.

After some time, he could hear the wedding march. The indication that the wedding is going to begin.

He could see Briar at the entrance. She's motioning for them to walk to enter the place.

The flower girls walk first, and the little boy, he's the ring bearer for sure.

He's awestruck with the sight as he enters the venue. This is so beautiful. He has never been with this kind of wedding arrangement. Not in the waterfalls. This place is mesmerizing. If he is going to marry, he wants to be something like this.  Oh, he changed his mind. At first, he thought that getting married in this place was troublesome, but now that he is in it, he wants to be something like this. He doesn't know that he has a romantic nerve before. Not until he meets Briar.

He looks behind hoping to see Briar. She wasn't there. Maybe she's still at the entrance.

When the bride entered, they were in awe. She's beautiful. He could see Josef's eyes lit up. The love is shown all over his face. Now, they know why the playboy finally decided to settle down. His bride is beautiful and he could sense that she has a good reputation.

When the bride is almost at the altar, he can see Briar with another beautiful woman entering the place. This place has many beautiful faces he thinks.

He noticed that Lucas' eyes couldn't tear at the woman beside Briar. He nudges his friend's arms.

"Who's that woman with Briar?" Lucas asks him is whisper

"How could I know, we arrived here at the same time." He replied in a whisper as well

When the Minister finally announced that the ceremony would begin, they all kept their mouth shut. They all remain silent until it's finished.

When the Minister finally said.

"Now before the people who have assembled here tonight, and in as much as you have each pledged to the other your lifelong commitment, love, and devotion, I now pronounce you husband and wife.

Those whom God has joined together, let no one put asunder.

You may now kiss each other to seal these promises."

The tears that had dropped from Briar's eyes hadn't escaped from his vision. Though he wouldn't know which those tears were he wanted to kiss them away. He couldn't explain and he doesn't understand this feeling he felt for Briar. This is all new to him in his thirty-two years.

He admitted he had crushes in high school but never felt like this towards the woman. It's unknown to him.
