I go to school wearing the same thing I wear everyday; jeans and a hoodie. I go to the back table of the cafeteria and sit in the corner seat against the wall. I’m starving, but I’m used to it by now.
“Hi, Araceli.” My boyfriend says, Kai, kissing me before sitting down next to me. . We have been dating for three years.
“Hi.” I say shyly. I look at my shoes. I still get nervous around him, like he is my middle school crush. I get so nervous sometimes that I don’t know what to say to him.
“I told you, you don’t have to be nervous around me.”Kai says, grabbing my hand.
“I know...I am just surprised that you are still with me. There are prettier, smarter girls."
“Hey!” He says and I look up at him. “ I chose you because, you’re beautiful, smart, funny, and we have everything in common. I have told you this a thousand times, Araceli. If I didn’t love you, I would have left a long time ago. You can’t go three years faking these types of feelings for someone. Nothing you do could make me love you any less.” Then he kisses me again. I sit there for a moment thinking about how to reply to that.
“ I know, to all of it. But I can’t imagine what my life would be like without you. Before you....” I trail off thinking about the past.
“It’s okay. That’s gone now. Don’t think about it now.” Kai says, putting his arm around me. He has a certain thing about him that makes everything better. No matter what is wrong, I can talk to him, and it’s like there is no wrong in the world.
I jumped as the bell to begin class rings. I laugh after the bell is done. I jump almost every time. I never expect it to happen, especially not today.
“Will you ever not be scared of the bell?” Kayla walks up behind us. She is my best friend. Well, my only friend. She has always stood beside me no matter what happened. And she still does. I couldn’t ask for a better friend. She has been through alot with me, and never gives up on me.
“I don’t know. I really wasn’t expecting it today. I was thinking, and then BAM! It’s time for class.” I say laughing.
“Oh wow. Well I have have to get to biology, so I’ll see ya later.” Kayla says.
“ See you at lunch.” I say as we go our separate ways.
“Hey, I got to go, too, babe. Just don’t think about it. Okay? Stay positive.” he says, and then kisses me bye. Then he heads to class.
The bell rings. Great. I’m late to my first class. What a great what to start the day. I ran to AP English/Writing. I found the room and opened the door. Luckily, the teacher was late, too. The room was unbelievably loud and it dropped to silence once I stepped in the door. You could drop a pen and hear every tap it made on the tile floor. Everyone looked at me. I looked down at the little colored specs in the tiles, just standing there. Some popular girls in the corner were whispering. A short black haired girl looked at me and they all laughed. I had to get out of the spotlight, so I started walking to a seat in the back left hand corner of the room. I wouldn’t be noticed there.
The worst thing that could have happened, did. My foot got caught on something, most likely Toby Walker’s foot, and I tripped and fell. I threw my books all over the floor and hit the ground. Hard. It didn’t help that I landed on my French book. Everyone saw. Everyone laughed. I heard someone say “Once a spaz always a spaz.”
Then another round of mean giggling. I picked up my books and pencil bag, and scurried to my potential seat. I put all my books up. I can feel a bruise forming underneath my ribs. What a great way to start the year.
