I walked into Mr. Legusy’s class and everyone was very loud. I don’t know why Mr.Legusy hadn’t started class yet, but I didn’t care. As long as no one saw me come in late.
“Come sit over here!” I hear Jenna. She won’t give up will she? I sigh and head over to the seat next to her. Who knows? Maybe this won’t be terrible.
“I read all of your stories last night.” Mr. Legusy says, finally beginning class. “Some of you are prepared and already know what we are going to do for the last month of school. Others… well, you need to brush up on your writing skills. So, for the rest of the year, we are going to be doing journal entries.” He writes ‘Do journal entries’ on the board. A wave of groans and complaints run through the classroom.
“I thought you were the cool teacher!” Jenna yells. My cheeks instantly become pink with embarrassment for sitting so close to her. But, everyone agrees with and shouts out “Yeah!”
“I am.” He says defending his title. “Since you will be doing journals, there will be little to no homework for the rest of the year. And, since I am the cool teacher, I am going to write them with you.” He smiles at us. People cheer at the few statements. I think the only statement that would have made them happier would be ’You won the lottery!’
“Your entries will be kept private if you want it to stay that way. I will be the only one who will read. Since I am the cool teacher,” He says smugly like he will always hold that title. “The topic today is How Do You Define Love. My entry will hang on the board everyday. You will be free to read it.” I nearly choke on my breath when he says the topic. He looks at me as he says ‘feel free to read it.’ I guess there is something in there that is for me or something.I’m not sure if I want to read it, though. I watch him as he takes the paper from his desk and pins it to the board with a magnet. Apparently, so was every girl in the class, including Jenna. Almost every girl gets up to read it. He almost didn’t get out of the way and almost got trampled. I seriously think he wants to go to jail. He is crazier than I thought.
“Awe! Whoever he loves is lucky.”
“That is so cute!”
“I wish he loved me.” Trust me. No you don’t. These were just some of the whispers and cries I heard. Their boyfriends rolling their eyes. Mr. Legusy hears them, too, and smiles at me. I feel my cheeks heating up and turning red. I smile and look down at my paper. He has no shame or embarrassment. He is actually really proud of it. Pure acceptance in what he feels and what he has done. This is his way of telling people about how he feels, without saying a word about me. He is a pure genius.
“Don’t you want to read it?” Jenna asks me.
“Um, I don’t think so.”
“Why?! Don’t you want to know how he feels?”
“I already do.” I whisper. Luckily, she didn’t hear me. “Nah. I don’t think it’s much of my business.”
“You are such a party pooper.” The room becomes silent and Mr. Legusy begins talking again.
“Thanks for all the insight girls.” He laughs, making all the girls blush. “Once you are done with your entries, turn to page four hundred four. Today is why punctuation matters…”

“So?” Kayla says as soon as I enter the room.
“He made us do journal entries and he is going to do them with us.”
“What about it?”
“Today’s journal entry was how do you define love.”
“Oh… I see the connection. What did it say?” She asks.
