Monday morning, Brandon and Callie had a doctor's appointment. They played hooky for their morning classes, even though Callie stressed that Brandon didn't need to come to every check-up, but Brandon insisted. She started her morning feeling particularly fidgety and it was like she grew a 12-week baby bump over night.
"Alright, Callie-" The OB-GYN, Dr. Avery, was starting to talk about her ultrasound while he was rolling the transducer in the gel on her stomach, but was interrupted by Brandon's ego.
"Do you think it's professional to call patients by their first name? Isn't their some policy where you need to call them by their title and last name?"
"You can certainly request that, if you'd like," he spoke to Callie, making it clear that he was talking to her instead of feeding Brandon's problem with him.
"Callie's fine," she said, scolding at the body attached to the hand that is squeezing her own.
"Okay, everything seems to be right on track. You are officially in your second trimester. With that, their a few things we need to discuss. It's a little soon to talk about the end of the pregnancy, but about half of multiples are born before 36 weeks gestation. The other half usually goes to about 37 or 38 weeks. Although, like we discuss, the estimated due date for you is about 37 weeks-"
"Speaking of the end, um..." Callie interrupted. "Oh, sorry I didn't mean to cut you off." The doctor shook it off, giving her the alright to continue with her concerns. "Two babies...means two...births, right?"
"Not quite," Dr. Avery laughed, knowing that she was talking about the pain and discomfort. "Well, I shouldn't say that, I suppose. A vaginal delivery with twins is similar to a single delivery. Depending on the time, your water will break and you will begin having contractions just like normal, or you will be induced and have the membrane ruptured. Everything just depends. You can choose to have an elective cesarean delivery. Personally, I would wait closer to the due date to decide on a delivery plan. Of course with any surgery, there can be complications. Also, there are things that will influence the decision on my part. The positioning of the twins at that time will impact it a lot."
Dr. Avery, Brandon, and Callie continued discussing all the things that come with the second trimester of a pregnancy. They asked about when they can find out the gender of the twins and he said anywhere between 14 and 19 weeks.
After they had finished talking, Callie was behind Brandon as they walked out of the room after Dr. Avery. Callie stopped in the doorway after Brandon had walked out of the office, not even realizing she wasn't behind him.
"Um, Dr. Avery," she spoke in a hush tone. "Is it normal to have, um...increased hunger?"
"Yes, is there a particular food you're craving?" The doctor asked, looking at her chart in his hand.
"No, I mean um..." Callie quickly poked her head out the door to make sure no one was walking by that exam room. "...increased hunger." The doctor finally knew what she meant from the tone of her voice and the look in her eyes.
"Yes, perfectly normal," Dr. Avery copied her same hushed tone.
"Okay, good, that's what I thought. Um, it's okay to, while pregnant I mean, you know-"
"Yes."
"Okay, that's good too. Cause we've already- you know that's beside the point. Just making sure." She was halfway out the door by now.
"Alright, see you next time."
Callie's brain was clouded by a sudden need, all day long. She kept trying to distract herself by using the most random things. She remembered the time when she did something similar in San Diego, she kept staring at the trees on her walk home. Everything she was feeling was similar to that time two years ago; the rapid heart rate and breathing. Callie used that tactic on her walk home to their apartment after classes. There was one every 10 feet or so on the sidewalk, enclosed in a square of dirt and mulch.
