It was a bright summer day and you were currently out with your best friend Mark, your boyfriend Carter, and Mark's friend Matt. The four of you were currently on your way towards some sort of bistro that was only a few blocks away from Mark's house, where you guys were hanging out before this.
This dinner was originally supposed to be you and Mark, but somehow, Carter and Matt ended up joining the two of you. You weren't angry, much. The entire day, you'd been battling with the thought of actually breaking up with Carter. It's sad to say but you just weren't in love with him anymore. Mark had been with you almost the entire day, and he knew there was something wrong with you. He tried to get you to budge, but you wouldn't open up which he was ok with, for now.
The four of you walked down the sidewalk, with you and Mark behind Matt and Carter. The two of them we're talking on about some movie where as you hadn't said a single word to Mark. You were too involved with your own thoughts to have a conversation.
Out of nowhere, you feel someone playfully punch your shoulder. Glancing towards your left, you saw Mark smirking as he looked at you.
"Come on Y/N, what are you thinking about up there?" He took his index finger and lightly tapped your temple.
"It's just... ughhh it's hard to explain." You told Mark.
"I'm a good problem-solver, maybe I can help." He continued to try and persuade you to talk. It took a few moments, but you sighed as he finally had you cracked.
"What would you do if you were dating someone, but you were in love with someone else?" You blurted out, loudly. Your eyes widen widened at the fact that Carter or Matt could have heard you. They went back to normal size once you heard they were still talking in depth about the newest Star Wars movie.
"Oo, how scandalous." Mark joked before clearing his throat. "Just tell the truth, to the both of them. I know you may care about hurting the guy's feeling, but I don't. I care more about your happiness than his. If breaking his heart will cause yours to be complete then so be it." It was things like this that made your heart swell. Mark always knew just what to say, where whenever you were upset and you were with Carter, he froze every single time.
"Thanks, Mark." As you thanked him, he quickly leaned over and placed a kiss on your cheek. Carter never liked the attention Mark gave you. He thought since he was your boyfriend, he's the only one who got to do that.
The four of you walked for another minute or so before Carter stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. He caught you so off guard, you had to stop yourself from running into Matt's back.
Carter whipped around to look at you, his blue eyes holding something you couldn't detect.
"I was going to wait until we got to the restaurant, but I just can't wait anymore." Carter stepped closer towards you, grabbing a hold of both your hands. Both Mark and Matt took steps back with looks of shock on their faces.
"The past 6 months have been a blessing from above. I knew from the moment I saw you, you'd be the girl I was going to marry. Originally, you weren't too fond of me, but I could see the love grow in your eyes as time went on. So..." With him still holding onto your hands, Carter got down on one knee. You had to stop the panic that started to arise in your eyes. You glanced at Mark, silently trying to call for help, but he didn't notice.
"Y/N, will you do me the honor of marrying me?" Carter asked with nothing but love in his eyes. You looked down at him as he was on one knee. You knew what you were going to say, but you didn't know how he'd react. Taking a deep breath in, you pulled your hands away from Carter's grasp. When you took a step backward, you heard a gasp come from both Matt and Mark.
"I'm sorry Carter, but I can't." Your eyes teared up as you stared down at Carter. You watched as sadness slowly overtook his face. Still down on one knee, Carter spoke up.
"I don't understand, was it something I did?"
"No Carter, it's not you, it's me. I'm just.... I'm in love with someone else." The words seemed to tumble out of your mouth. Glancing at the other two, Matt seemed to suddenly be absent while Mark just stood there, dumbfounded. The sadness in Carter quickly turned to anger as he launched up from the ground.
"What the hell? Wait, let me guess. It's your fucking best friend huh?" Carter spat out as he glared at you. Mark moved and now stood in between the two of you slightly.
"Listen, man, I swear it's not me. I had no idea.." Mark jumped in to speak, but you cut him off. Here's the time to be honest.
"You're right Carter. I'm in love with my best friend." Now not only was Carter staring at you with his mouth hanging open, so was Mark. By the look on his face, you could tell he didn't see this coming.
"I've never lied to you before, so I'm not going to start now. I fell in love with Mark, and yes, I realize he most likely doesn't feel the same way, but it's time the truth came out. I'm sorry you had to find out this way Carter, but I don't love you anymore." You shakily let a breath out as you stared at the both of them.
Carter locked eyes with you one last time before he walked off in the other direction, leaving you and Mark alone.
Not letting your eyes settle on Mark, you looked everywhere but in his direction.
"I'm sorry Mark, but It's the truth. I know..." Suddenly, you saw a hand covering your mouth, stopping you from speaking. You noticed it was Mark's hand.
"You really need to learn when to shup up Y/N. Let's talk about this when we get back to my place, ok?" He took his hand off your mouth, only to place his lips against your temple. Since Carter was no longer standing there, his lips stayed there for a few seconds longer before he pulled away. Using his left arm, he tucked you into his side and directed the two of you towards his house.
You knew that the relationship with your best friend was about to change dramatically.
