You climbed aboard the plane, the nerves inside you already kicking into overdrive. I think it was safe to say that you hated airplanes with a fiery passion. The only thing you liked about them was the fact that they landed. It would be a 5-hour long nightmare that hadn't even started and you were already dreading it. Currently, you were traveling from LA back to your home in DC. You were in LA for business for the past few days and were excited to be home.
As you made your way through the aisle to find your seat, you felt as if the metal cylinder was already closing in on you. Eventually, you found you seat which was by a window. After taking care of your suitcase, you plopped down into the seat and attempted to put your nerves at ease.
Time slowly ticked by as you sat there, waiting for everyone else to take their seat. Your left knee starting bouncing ever so slightly. God, could people just sit so you could get this fucking flight over with?
It wasn't long after that did someone take a seat next to you. He was a heavier guy in his mid 40's wearing what was obviously a troupe. For some reason, the panic starting rising inside you. A few seconds after you began to panic, another man spoke up.
"I'm sorry sir, but would you mind switching seats with me? That's my girlfriend there and she doesn't do flying well so I'd like to be next to her to calm her down." Girlfriend? What the hell? You looked up from the ground at the younger man standing in the aisle. His black hair was swept under a baseball cap. The rim of his cap blocked his eyes, so you couldn't see what the hell was going on behind those.
'What the hell does this guy think he's doing?' you asked yourself. You didn't know this man, so why was he saying you were his girlfriend?
"Sure, of course Man. No problem." It only took a few minutes for the older guy and the younger guy to switch seats. Before you knew it, the younger man was sitting next to you while the man from earlier was halfway down the plane.
"Sorry about putting you on the spot, I'm Mark." Mark gave you a reassuring smile as you just stared at him with a blank look on your face. "Not a fan of flying I take it?"
"I wonder what made you think that." You laughed dryly as you stared back down at the ground.
"I know someone whose not a fan of flying, they go through the same motions you're going through. Nerves go through the roof, knee bounces like crazy.." As you opened your mouth to continue speaking, the captain announced that we would begin take off. Oh great, the worst part.
You leaned back in the seat as your hand gripped the armrests. Squeezing your eyes shut, you tried taking deep breaths to calm your nerves with was failing. Great, a panic attack on the airplane, just what you needed!
Suddenly, you felt Mark's hand rest on your elbow and slowly start making it's way down to your left hand.
"Keep your eyes closed, and keep breathing. You're going to be just fine." His calming voice softly spoke to you. You followed his instructions and just kept breathing. It was still difficult to do.
"What are you going to DC for?" Mark asked you out of the blue.
"Well, that was random as all hell." With your eyes still closed, you heard a deep chuckle come from his direction.
"Just answer the question."
"I'm going home actually. I was in LA for business." You felt the plane slowly start picking up speed so you squeezed your eyes shut even tighter than before which you didn't know was possible.
"I'm going out to DC to visit some old friends. They've been asking me to come out for ages. Plus we're going to do something for charity while I'm out there. Is DC as beautiful as they say it is?" Mark asked you.
"It's got it's perks, just like any city." As you felt the plane begin to take off, you knee started bouncing even more. Mark's hand went from laying on top of your hand, towards your knee. Once his hand rested on your knee, he lightly grabbed your knee between his middle finger and thumb.
"It's almost over, just relax.." Mark told you in a soothing tone once again. For the first time since you got on the plane, you did begin to relax. Your breathing started becoming more even and your knee started to slow down.
The takeoff lasted for a few minutes longer, but once it ended, Mark took his hand off your knee. Eventually, you opened your eyes and stared straight into the seat ahead of you.
"See, I told you! Everything's fine, we're not going to crash!"
"I wouldn't count your chickens before they hatch, we still have another five hours for some thing drastic to happen."
"Wow, aren't you Miss negativity?"
"What can I say, I fucking hate airplanes." You heard Mark laugh slightly before he spoke up again.
"No offense to you, but I'm going to try and get some sleep now." You watched as Mark tried to get comfortable in the seat. Mark didn't seem like he was an overly large guy, but he still was finding it quite difficult to get comfortable.
"Thank you for attempting to calm me down. You didn't have to help a stranger out."
"It's no problem," Mark said, his voice already being dragged down by sleep. "You'll just have to let me take you to dinner once we get in DC to repay the favor."
"Guess I'm going to Dinner in DC with you."
"I guess you are."
