Jeanette swung open her locker door in the hallway, only to find...

Nothing.

It did not come off as much of a surprise to Jeanette since she had already cleared most of her things for summer revision.  But why was there a note telling her to open it? There must be something. She looked around her locker, before something caught her eye. On the floor of her locker, laid an envelope. She picked it up curiously.

Another letter all of a sudden? She thought to herself.

"Was Alvin lying about the envelope being for me?" She wondered aloud, opening it.

Hey Jeanette,

Sorry this would be my last letter. Okay, not really. But this is my last written letter. Dave keeps all the envelopes now in his drawer, locked. You did a very smart guess, but I don't blame you when you are wrong.

Jeanette blinked in astonishment. What did the last sentence mean?

I understand why you have this theory, because if I were you I'd believe those evidence too. But if you paid close attention, there is another option. What you believed in was a total misunderstanding. Remember the library book you borrowed just yesterday and Simon was all secretive about it? Take it out and flip to Chapter 40.

~Ammon

Jeanette looked at the name in confusion. She got her theory wrong? What theory? She put the letter down, digging into her bag for the library book. She did as the letter instructed her to, flipping to a page where a folded note was placed in. She then recalled the time she caught Simon with this book. When she called out to him, approaching him at the table, he was in a hurry to hide something from her.

Hey Jeanette,

Do you remember who you found the first time I told you that we'd meet? I was there, but I couldn't bring myself to reveal my secret when you came along with someone. How about every lunch time, when one of your friends would vanish, either making excuses to go somewhere, or suddenly showing up with the excuse of homework or just being busy? I hid myself away in the library at that quiet corner, writing out my feelings for you. Or who surprisingly showed up at your locker when you were crying in school all morning? I couldn't find you anywhere, so I intended to leave a note to cheer you up that day. I hadn't had the courage to tell it to you, and I told you before - in letter and in person - it takes time to achieve courage.

Jeanette gasped upon realising who it was. She covered her mouth in utter shock, reading on.

But you taught me that even though courage needed time to be achieved, there comes a time where we have to step out of our comfort zone, or we never will in the end. I never told you my secret about my feelings, due to the fear of rejection and our friendship being jeopardised. In the end, you chose another boy right in front of my eyes. That was when I realised that not stepping out of my shell was my loss. I had many chances to tell you, but I always blew it.

But now I've learned from my mistakes. So can we do that meeting like I suggested we could? On the bench where we've met up before? Remember the day we were going to the public library together? I promise, this time, I'll be there for real, without lying. I'm done hiding.
