THE TWO MEN SLOWED TO A WALK. I RECOGNIZED one from my dreams and my necklace. The other one was a beautiful man but he had rounded scars all over his skin, as if someone had bitten him over and over again – it sent chills down my spine. His hair was blond, framing his sharp features – he looked miserable. A since of calming over took me but it was not natural and it wasn't mine.
"Can I see it?" It was the man who was supposed to be my father who spoke. I looked at him and he knew I didn't know what he meant. "The necklace...I want to see it."
I hesitated but put my hand in my pocket and pulled out my small gold necklace. He studied the outside of it, running his fingers over the gold before carefully opening it. I snatched it out of his hands before he could see anything too important.
"Tell me why you're here first."
He scowled at me and shook his head. "Give it to me. I need to see it." His voice was hard and ice cold.
Reluctantly, I handed it back to him. He repeated his first action, running his fingers over the gold once more. His eyes didn't
leave the necklace as he spoke. "We were sent to kill the mutt and bring you back to them."
My jaw dropped as I stared at him. All my instincts told me to run away but something inside me held me at his side. I didn't use my words to respond. I don't know why but I'm not afraid of you, just of you being taken from me again.
"Again?"
Ignoring his question, I pointed to the locket he held in his hands.
He gathered himself and took two deep breaths. Closing his eyes, he slowly opening the small gold necklace. As his eyes opened, his knees buckled beneath him, he fell to the ground with an intense force. No tears fell from his eyes but I knew he was crying. His perfect face twisted into shier pain. "B...Be," he sat there in silence for what felt like forever, "Bella." The name came out like razors in his throat. His gaze dropped as he froze – he became as stiff as a statue.
It was all I could do to not comfort him but I knew he knew I wanted to. I don't know why I feel this way but I know you're my father, I can see it in your face. Don't be upset with me, I didn't know this would happen. I didn't know any of this would happen.
There was a shift in the atmosphere as Jasper reached out for Edward.
Jacob grabbed my shoulder and pulled me close to his side. He turned his body and placed himself between Edward and I.
"Jasper stop." Edward spat the words out with disgust but calmed to a whisper. "Let me feel today." I was puzzled by his outburst. I couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking and how he was feeling. He instantly looked up at me. "You have her eyes." His face was still twisted with pain but I could see hope too.
"I do?" I was pleased with his comment.
"You do, but the smile is mine." A smirk spread across his face and I couldn't help but smile back.
I pushed around Jacob very carefully and took a step closer to Edward. "Do you remember anything?" I wanted to know more but I didn't want to seem too pushy.
"I," there was a long pause while he pinched the bridge of his nose, "I believe so."
I pondered his response for a moment, thinking before I
