"You know..." Akari muses aloud for the fifth time from his perch on the breakfast bar while the others watch America's Next Top Model.
"What?"
He doesn't respond and we all look back to him; he takes a huge bite of ice cream. "I don't remember."
"Akari, oh my gosh you're so annoying."
"Would you like me to dump my ice cream on your stupid curls, Vivienne?"
"I'd like to see you try," she replies with her worst glare.
"Guys," Milo says, ever the peacekeeper. "Can we not fight?"
"We're not doing anything," they say in unison then glare at each other.
My phone rings and I'm saved. I trot down a couple of the stairs to sit at the bottom as I swipe the screen.
"Ellis! I miss you so much, darling..." I hug my knees, pressing the phone to my ear.
"Hi hi hi! Sorry I haven't texted, I've been busy doing family things. My aunt tried to set me up with her her intern but I was like, Nancy, I'm bi not blind, then my mom was like, I told you so, and it continued from there."
"Was she nice at least?"
"She loves Coldplay."
"Gross."
"Exactly. Are you with Cambridge?"
"Yeah, we've been hanging out a lot... well I'm at his house, he's emotionally comforting his brother at the moment."
"Oh, drama."
"What are you doing?"
"I'm sitting on the porch freezing because the house is full of relatives who'd love to listen to my conversation. Anyway, let's talk about something more interesting; you should start watching ANTM I'm on the 9th season and I need to talk about it with someone."
"I only watch the Australian one."
"I wonder if there's a Canadian one, I'll Google it, one sec...hmm, I think it crashed and burned, the last episode was in 2009. Depressing. This conversation is depressing, I feel like we're completely unsynced."
"I know, it sucks."
"Mm."
"Mm..."
"So..." I press my feet to the opposite wall, "Have you hung with Abel?"
"Yeah, yesterday and the day before. We were going to go to this Christmas Eve shindig but we changed our minds at the last minute and watched music in my basement until 2 a.m."
"Just music videos?"
"Just music videos. Oh, hey, this guy from studio drawing started texting me though."
"Really, how cute on a scale of one to ten?"
"Like, fire. I'll DM you a picture on Instagram, one sec."
I feel more than hear footsteps on the stairs; Cam stands at the top, leaning on the wall. He gives a little wave then makes some sort of complicated hand gesture pointing, I think, to the second floor, then smiles and walks back. He's possibly going to bed, or going on a space mission I didn't know about. Gabriel must be okay now.
"His name is Greyson and he's got the finest eyebrows you've ever seen."
