***"Let's get zen," is what Sierra said when she barged barged into my room while I was doing my morning Instagram-scroll. "And call Art Boy."
Ellis is leaning against a lamp post wearing skinny joggers and a zip-up sweater. A cool breeze lifts my ponytail and sends a shiver down my spine beneath my hoodie.
"It's November, and you want to meditate with a group of Asians next to the skate park." I say, crossing my arms. Ellis joins us and stands close enough that I can smell his cologne and laundry-detergent scent.
"The short answer is yes. Hey, Art Boy." She says, and waves to the young man standing near a - an actual - gong.
She smiles at the guy, and they talk about the clouds while people slowly join our circle. Ellis sits near me and rests his elbow on my knee. "Hey," he says.
"So how was your Thanksgiving between our talks?" I ask.
"Mm, average. I got to see one of my friends, Abel."
"What did you do?"
"Hung out, walked around. Drank his aunt's strawberry wine in his bedroom." I arch an eyebrow, and he smirks. "Strawberry wine is bombass."
I smile, and he smiles, and mine feels a little less fake than I thought it would. My phone buzzes from my pocket, but I leave it there.
"It's a heuristic process," the gong-guy tells Sierra. A boy skates up the fence-enclosed ramp to my left, but only his board makes it to the top, and he yells five seconds after an angry bone-on-cement crack echoes.
"It's broken," a girl says.
Ellis is watching all of this with a comical expression. I elbow him, and he laughs. "It's just so zen."
