Falling. Endlessly falling.Falling through a white void of nothingness.
Destroying my new found peace. I’m helpless no way to stop this. I cry out. No one responds, not even the look of acknowledgment of my disappearance. The rush I feel from falling reminds me of the jump in Dauntless, the unknowingness of where I will is exactly the same, but then I knew they wouldn’t kill their new initiates.
The figures of loved ones are getting smaller and smaller, I can’t leave these people I have only just been brought back together with, even the ones I hated through my life. This is my life now, the life beyond life. I thrash around violently, trying to hold onto something to stop this but it’s futile. Once again I am leaving these people and I have a new fear of where I am falling to.
Suddenly the falling stops and I slightly open my eyes , that automatically closed while I was falling, streaks of man-made light burns my pupils. I don’t know whether I’ve lost my hearing or wherever I am is eerily silent. My heart rate gets quicker like a bomb bleeps faster nearer the time of explosion. As the burning in my eyes decreases I open them fully, trying to get a sense of where I am. Am I still dead? I must be there’s no such thing as bringing people back from the dead.
I lie on a cold metal table, one of the only bits furniture in the room. A small door takes prominence on the otherwise bleak white walls. A surgical trolley stands in the corner underneath the window, it’s littered with needles and electronic devices which I don’t recognise. In this new world outside Chicago I hardly recognise anything. I look down at my body, un-pierced from bullet wounds, cuts stitched up like they were never there, no peril threated on me. I’m hooked up to a maze of wires, they look like snakes diving into my skin. Snakes. My heart strains as I remember Uriah, the snake tattoo striking behind his ear. I still wear the same outfit as the day I died; I’m surprised Christina didn’t feel the urge to dress me up like a doll.
Now I know where I ended up all I want is to be back with my parents, I don’t want to spend another moment in this room, wherever this is in the dead world. The dead don’t test on others like the living do, so why would I be here all of a sudden? It’s just like being a guinea pig in one of the Erudite experiments they did to test for different medicines and serums. I hear the door creak but my neck stiffens so I’m unable to who or what made that noise. My mind runs through monsters that cruelly were brought to life in stories the Dauntless used to tell the younger children when it was dark. My chest rises and falls rapidly, my fist clench together although I will be unable to fight.
“Hello Beatrice. Welcome back. How are you doing?” Says a recognisable voice. Not a monster’s voice. Caleb’s voice. Is he dead? He can’t be, he welcomed me back. Is revival really possible? Surely not, although knowing what people are capable to do these days it may not be as impossible as I once thought. I can feel myself freaking out but Caleb’s voice keeps that panic from showing and I order myself to breathe properly.
“Am I still dead?” I ask meekly, my voice crackling a bit. I hear him chuckle quietly and move so I can see him. He’s older, stubble grows on his once soft child-like skin, his shape more refined, he’s even grown more and his voice is deeper though still recognisable to me.
“No, you’re alive. I’ve been secretly working on a new serum for a few years now. I called it the Resurgence serum.” Caleb smiles warmly at me. I’m alive, I never thought I would hear those words again. I try to make it sink in so that I can relax but I’m still tense, ready to move. The danger is back.
“How long is a few years? How old are you?” Questions building up by the second.
“I’m 20 now, but you same to have not aged, you look the exact same as you did when….” His voice trails off. I can see it is still killing him in the insides, he must feel so guilty, I hope he doesn’t blame himself for my death.
