Suddenly there’s a shout from the other side of the iron door behind Samuel, “Tris?!”. It’s Tobias’ voice. He’s not dead.  My heart soars so high I’m scared I’ll lose it. The lock of the door starts to shake and Samuel and his men seem frozen to the spot. The door unexpectedly flies to the floor with a bang and there stands Tobias, pointing a gun at Samuel. Samuel raises his arms in surrender but doesn’t even flinch when Tobias wraps his fingers around the trigger to shoot him, he just laughs.

“I knew you would come and rescue your pathetic little girl.” Samuel snarls with a smile that is so twisted that it’s something I will have nightmares about.

“Well then you could’ve had better guards. Those people were pansycakes.” Tobias replies. At the word pansycake he chances a swift look at me that makes me have to try and hold in the laughter. I bow my head down to disguise the smile on my face in case one of the men that were standing by the door decides to shoot me. However from the corner of my I can see that they’re not as brave as they first appear to be as they hold their guns in the air but seem unsure as to what to do and I see them slowly walking towards the door. If they chose Dauntless they would without a doubt not pass initiation and have to become Factionless.

“My men aren’t ordered to shoot people with anger issues.”

“I don’t have anger issues.” Tobias retorts, holding his gun ever closer to Samuel’s chest.

“Your obsession with killing people if they don’t give you what you want. I think there’s a problem there.”

“I don’t do that, anyone knows that, I’m not brutal like you. I’m not willing to kill my own sister for her parent’s sacrificing themselves for her, which she had no control over.” Tobias stands up for me and my hope that it wasn’t my fault that my parent’s died, but in my heart his attempt is futile.

“Well you are about to kill your own brother.” There goes the shock tactic. Tobias lowers his gun slightly and looks at me as if to reassure him of the truth. All I can do is nod my head to his unvoiced question.  Tobias doesn’t reply to this, he seems to mentally shake the thought away and heads towards me, still aiming the gun at Samuel.  When he gets to me he gives me a lingering kiss before he goes behind me to undo the chains that hold my arms behind my back.

“Where’s the key?” Tobias demands.

“One of the guards in here had it but they’ve just run away like babies.” Samuel explains, his voice so clam, I don’t know how he does it. Even the sight of the gun in Tobias’ hand has set me on edge and I wish he would put it away but I know he must keep it on view.

“I told you your men were pansycakes.” He mutters in response while he rattles the chains and I wonder what he’s doing. “Don’t worry; I’ll get you out of here.” He whispers in my ear, so softly that I have to replay it in my head to make out what he said.” There a loud bang from the gun only a few centimetres away and I instantly look at Samuel who still stands there with a half amused look on his face and my arms feel free, Tobias shot the lock. I check to see whether I can still feel my hands or if they’re bleeding but it seems Tobias still has good aim.  I rise up quickly out of the chair and eye up the exit. I want to run, even if Tobias doesn’t follow but I need Tobias to lead me out. Those men that left may be outside the door, waiting until we try to escape to shoot us down dead, so I need Tobias’ weapon to keep us safe. All of us safe, seeing as I count for two people. I had almost forgotten about the baby, this should be a happy period in my life; we’re bringing a child into our world. But this moment in time isn’t happy, it’s full of death and worrying about where the next weapon is that could kill you and at the moment we’re bringing this child into a world which seems peaceful and safe on the outside but on the inside Chicago is crawling with unknown people ready to kill you with no motive.   This is not a place I want to bring a baby up in.
