Resurgence (Life After Allegiant - Divergent Fanfiction)

Chapter Eight

I sink to the floor and Tobias runs to me, he sinks to the floor as well. It’s just like we first we reunited after my revival. But it’s so different. Instead of new life it’s old death.  Our fight just now reminded me of how isolated we are. It’s just us two. Tobias and I.  If one of us dies then we’ll be on our own. No one to watch their back. No one to support them. No one to love. The thoughts makes me sick down to my stomach.  

The man knew about Tobias’ nickname. How long has he been watching us? How much about us does he know? So many questions that once again can’t be answered.

“You’re so brave Tris. I’m so proud of you.” His words remind me of speaking to a child when they’ve done something that’s not really important.

“Yeah well, anyone would’ve done it.”

“No, not everyone. Only the people like you, people willing to bring back so many memories and so much pain to face their fear for someone.”

“But you’re not just someone.”  I argue.

“I can tell I’m not going to win this one.” I shake my head at him. “Let’s get out of here, you need fresh air before you pass out and I can’t spend another second here.” I get up without responding, I hug Tobias. He smells like blood, and I look up at him, I lift a hand to his face and wipe the falling warm blood. He bends down and kisses me then walks over to collect Anna once again.  I make sure I leave a wide birth and end up at the locked door. I kick it in, my leg in mid-air, it cracks but doesn’t break. I slam my whole body against the door but it only laughs at my attempt. I won’t let Tobias do it; I need to prove to myself that I can do this simple thing. I growl and walk back a few steps then run into the door, I swings open and I fall through the open gap. Dust from the ceiling and floor collides and covers me. I cough hoarsely, Tobias laughs as he comes through the doorframe.

“It’s not funny.” I say but I know it’s useless to say so. It just makes him laugh even more. I jump up and dust myself off before walking away. I realise we never said where we were going but we must be going back to my Abnegation home to get some of the Resurgence serum for Anna. It’ll be more complicated then we first expected I imagine but we need answers and this girl has them.

We don’t really talk on our way to the Abnegation sector. We’re too caught up in our own thoughts and memories. Sometimes silence is more than a blessing.  I can see the Factionless sector ahead, the tarmac turning to mud and rocks. The whole city seems to be deserted, I hardly see anyone on the streets. Maybe they’re all working or maybe no one really lives here anymore.  From what I’ve heard anything could be possible.  We pass a shop named Snack Attack, looking in, it sells all sorts of cake but I know that it could never be as good as Dauntless cake. A girl with black swinging hair sweeps the floor and knocks over a tray off someone’s table. The man sitting at the table gets up and starts to look angry, he seems to be shouting but I can’t hear. The black haired girl seems to be equally as mad and looks like she’s shouting back.  The man swings the back of his fist against the girls cheek, I open my mouth in shock. The girl retaliates by hitting the man around the head with the broom in her head and picks up the tray and smashes it in his face. She storms out of the green and black door and grabs her hair like she’s ripping it out. She spins and faces us, she looks at us with a stare that could kill and then her face lights up and mine does too. It’s Christina.

She runs across the road and we embrace with a force that nearly knocks me over. It’s strange; we never used to have a relationship like this. It shows what time can do to a friendship.  She’s breathless and I can’t stop grinning. Totally forgetting the past few days.

“There’s no way I’m working another day in that hell hole.” She says exasperatedly. I laugh and she turns to Tobias. “See I’m right about some things.” She gives him a knowing smile and he rolls his eyes.
