“You’re going to pay for this.” Marcus half gasps half moans. We both look down at him and Tobias smirks but neither of us say anything. The look on Tobias’ is beginning to scare me now, the look of a psychotic serial killer, but we’ve both killed so many people, maybe it’s just our nature now. That thought brings me down to earth from wherever I was.  The room has started getting more and more engulfed by the fire which seems to have gotten a little out of control.

Suddenly wary, I ask Marcus, “How do we get out of here?” I know the actual chance of him telling me is very small but it’s worth a shot. Expectantly, he snorts and shrugs his shoulders as much as he can before he winces in pain. This gives Tobias an idea, he grabs Marcus’ new stump and squeezes hard, despite the ridiculous amounts of blood gushing out of it. Marcus screams, a noise I have never heard from him before and it sends a shiver down my spine and I don’t understand why, I’ve heard so many screams before. All these things I have done and heard and seen before I am beginning to realise, in this room, how much of a monster I am. It makes me feel sick, and this time not from pregnancy.

“Tell us!” Tobias yells, “Or I squeeze harder.” Just to prove he will do it, even though everyone knows he’s more than willing to, he crushes the stump a little harder and Marcus flails but is growing ever weaker and weaker as he lies there.

“Ok, ok.” Marcus squeals. He points at the two posts that we were tied to originally and whispers “Pull.” Tobias looks at me expectantly, and so nodding, I get up and head over to the closest wooden post. Flames threaten to scorch any part of my body; nevertheless, I manage to eventually heave the post away from the ground. It’s warm but bearable and I see the bottom part has caught fire and I stamp on it to put it out. I fling it towards Tobias before I jog over to the next one. Assessing it for a few seconds before deeming it fairly safe and pull as hard as I can to detach the next post. As soon I do that, the ground starts to shake and it starts to slide downwards. I try to reach Tobias and Marcus but my foot slips on the moving floor and I end up falling down into the growing black void.

“Tris, stay where you land!” I hear Tobias shout, as if I wasn’t going to do that anyway. His voice is followed by a scream from Marcus which means they must be in the process of falling too. The falling lasts for a couple of seconds, I’m not as worried as I was the last couple of times I’ve fallen but still apprehensive. After the seconds of endless falling are over, I crash to the ground, and not elegantly. And without fail, Marcus and Tobias must follow as a sound like thunder radiates through the darkness. For a minute or two, I sit there waiting for something to happen, hoping some light appears but nothing happens. Suddenly I feel a hand on my shoulder and I jump.

“Just me.” Tobias says softly and I let myself relax a little. “Marcus, where are the lights?” Just what I was wondering. I think Marcus has given up trying to resist helping us, realising how much of a disadvantage he really is.

“Lights on. Disarm.” Whatever was in here Marcus just saved us from, I can hear rock grind against rock and I wonder what exactly was about to try and kill us. But I’m not sure I really want to know, best keep my mind away from it.   The lights cough into action, flickering lazily. I finally see Tobias behind me with Marcus in a small pool of blood next to his hand; his words were so weak I’m suddenly worried he may not make it to wherever we are going to take him. A tiny door can be seen in the furthest corner of the room. The room is the same colour as the lights, boring and dismal and yet somehow emits a sense of insecurity.  I point to the door, turning to face Tobias who nods.
