Chapter Two

It must be about two days after my revival, there’s no clock or calendar to know for sure though. Caleb is my only visitor, even though every time the door opens my heart soars for another familiar face, but still I appreciate his company. I wonder when or if I will ever be allowed out of these four walls, Caleb is always too busy sticking needles and monitors in me to get a better answer than just a groan or a mumble while he concentrates on not stabbing me.

A few hours after I wake up Caleb comes in, he looks at his watch and grins. I give him a puzzled look back, I recognise the watch, and it used to be my father’s. Our father’s. The pain of remembrance only lasts a little moment as Caleb turns around and starts talking to an empty doorframe. I pray that he hasn’t gone insane, that’s all I need, in fact I should be the insane one here.

“Come on, come in stranger.” Caleb smirks. Stranger? Oh boy, now the doorframe is a stranger. Next the light bulb will be a friend. What is happening in this world? I have no clue anymore.

“Caleb….What on earth?” He just laughs and points at the doorframe. “Are you feeling ok?”

That’s when I hear the shuffle of muffled footsteps and a large breath as if the person making the noise is preparing themselves. I guess it must be quite a shock to whoever it is to see me alive again. Caleb beckons them in and the stranger starts to make an entrance, judging by the closeness and loudness of the footsteps.

“Hello beautiful.” They say as they enter my eye. My heart freezes and I have trouble breathing. They keep walking into my room and then make their way towards where I sit, on my table.  A lump has appeared in my throat, my eyes well up but not in sadness but in complete and utter happiness.

The stranger is Tobias.

I almost launch myself off the table but my legs give way and I grab onto the side of the table for support. He reaches me, looks me straight in the eye, his eyes are glassy with tears. I tell myself to keep breathing. He sinks to his knees, and I fall with him. No one dares to break this silence so we just sit there, holding each other like we will never let go. A fine slither of water makes it way down his cheek, I trace the line with my bony finger and he brings our foreheads together. His smell relaxes me, the smell of soap and sweat.

“I am never leaving you alone, ever.” He whispers, and I smile slightly through my battle with tears.

“Someone had to die.” I reply after a while. Will every time I meet a loved one end up with talking about my death? I can just hope that it doesn't, it seems more painful to them than it does to me.

“Not you though. You were too precious to lose.”

“I couldn’t let Caleb do it.”

“Yes you could’ve, but your selflessness said otherwise.”

“I knew there was a chance that I could survive, but I knew Caleb wouldn’t endure the death serum. It was worth trying to save both of us. He is my brother after all.” I swivel my eyes away to find Caleb but he’s gone, I’m relieved.

“Oh Tris…” He sighs.

“Oh Tobias.” I copy him, slightly teasing his frustration.

“God, I love you.”

“I love you too, more than you’ll ever know.”

“Tris? Are you in pain?” He questions.

“No. Why?” My answer isn’t words but his lips on mine. The feeling brings a mass of sparks; this is what being electrocuted must feel like. Our lips become desperate for each other’s touch and our breaths become louder. He combs through my short hair and my fingers run through the valleys between his muscles, they’re bigger than I remember. I feel his strong hands slide down my back and end at the bottom of my back, I sense his muscle tense as he picks me up. I wrap my legs around his hips, still kissing him passionately like we’ve never been apart. He carries me onto the table and sets me down, my face is finally at the same height as his, making everything a little easier. Once in a while a groan will escape our lips. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so alive. Maybe the resurgence serum is still in my veins, but Tobias is more the reason for this feeling.

Suddenly Tobias breaks free and I wonder what the problem is. “I almost forgot.” He says. Which doesn’t help my confusion, only adds to it. I find that I am continually confused, maybe I’m not as clever as I used to be. He beams knowingly and I just raise my eyebrows.

He gets on one knee.

This can't be happening.

No it can't be.

His hand goes into his pocket.

He reveals a small black shiny box.

He balances the box delicately in his fingers, as if touching it it’s a bomb, and angles it so the opening faces me.

“Tris…” He sounds nervous as he opens the box, the light from the light bulb clashes with the thing inside and the new bright light blinds me. I have other things to think about though.

“Uhuh.” Is all I can manage.

“When you died, my whole existence seemed pointless. I was just ready to take the memory serum, ready to forget you when Christina stopped me, I will forever be in her debt now, she was so right. You changed me, from a person I knew I didn’t want to be to someone I was proud to be. You made me feel safe, well safe as I could feel. Without you, I don’t know where I would be, I hate to think about it.  I never understood why you loved me but I was always certain about my love for you. I realised my whole life is lived for you. I don’t think I can spend any more time apart from you.” He pauses for breath; I try not to melt as I look into his striking blue eyes. “Will you marry me?”

“Do you even have to ask that question. We are the reason for who we both are. We are one. Oh course I’ll marry you. Anything else would seem unliveable.” Tears reappear, I don’t even care. I slide my hand underneath his chin and pull him up from his knees.

“Thank god, you don’t know how stressed I’ve been over that.” He takes the ring out of the box and I feel the slightly cold circle encase my finger.

“Why would you be nervous?”

“You know how awful I am at romantic stuff. It’s just cheesy to me.” He admits and I laugh at him.

“You’re better than I could ever be, it was the most beautiful thing someone has ever said to me. Scrap that, the most beautiful thing someone has ever said, ever.”

I look down to see the ring for the first time. Stunning. The only word it can be described as. A silver ring curves around my finger and a diamond takes pride of place on the top. I gasp, the beauty doesn’t look like it belongs on my hand but at the same time I feel like it’s a part of me. Of course it is, it’s a part of Tobias too.

It’s our future. No one can destroy it. No weapon can destroy it. Our future is as indestructible as our love.
