I was shaking so much that I didn’t know what was going on. Someone came in here, did something horrible to me then left. The thing that he did was painful but it felt numbing. I was too much in a trance to feel anything, seeing Tobias die in front of my eyes made everything seem not important. I replayed the moment after the shot many times, each vision as painful as the first time I watched it. I wasn’t sure of much, almost nothing at all but there was something I knew so badly.
I need to get out of here. And fast.
The thought of escaping somehow brings me back to my senses and the pain of the deeds the men have done to me during my trance is excruciating but I won’t show my pain, even if there’s no one in the room but me. It’s only then that I see that someone has opened the door and is standing there. I see it’s Samuel and I wonder what awful thing he wants from me, yet more pain, I don’t understand why he doesn’t just kill me and be done with it. No that would be too kind and my death wouldn’t be enjoyable.
“Zeke, it’s your turn.” He says, looking to his right where Zeke must be standing but due to the wall I cannot see him. Zeke sheepishly walks into view and starts to walk towards me, avoiding eye contact with me. He holds his hands behind his back and I wonder if he’s hiding something from me. That’s when I catch a glimpse of something in his hands. It look like leather tassels, which can only mean one thing, it’s a whip. “Good boy Zeke, you know it makes sense.” Samuel says with a snarling smile as he leaves us alone.
“Tris..I..” Zeke starts to say.
“I always knew you were a traitor.” I say, my eyes piercing into his. He looks hunched over and his eyes have black circles underneath from lack of sleep.
“You don’t know the whole story!” Zeke protests.
“I don’t need to know the story to know what’s going on Zeke. What would Uriah think of you?” I know that talking about Uriah may have been too harsh even for what Zeke has done but I can’t help it. My rage can’t be controlled and since I’m tied up, words are the only way of violence I have.
“Don’t you dare speak against me using my brother.” He spits at me. I see the guilt turn to anger. I realise that making Zeke angry while I’m so vulnerable may have been a mistake. Will he actually hurt me? I can just hope he remembers the good times we had together and how much we mean to each other. Although the time we shared was sparse, it meant so much.
“I’m sorry.” I reply, trying to bury the fury for everyone’s sake. “I just need to get out of here, Zeke. I need to find Tobias.” Once those words are out of my mouth I instantly regret it. I may have trusted Zeke before but now I don’t know what he’ll do with those words. Will he turn them against me, causing more violence? Or will he suddenly remember Tobias and the friendship they shared and decide that maybe there is a chance that he can get me out of here? Zeke’s expression is so hard to read that the next few seconds are tense until he moves and seems to have made up his mind.
“I’ve done wrong, Tris. I knew that from the very second I heard that Samuel was hunting you down. He told me you were alive and that you were in danger and that I was needed to help save her. I believe him and tried to track you down. It was later when I realised that Samuel’s intentions weren’t what they first seemed like and I tried to leave but they threatened Shauna. I can’t have anyone threaten her. So I had to go along with it. But now I will help you escape, and I will escape with you.” His eyes are full of pain and the emotion is so raw that I find it hard not to burst into tears. I know exactly what he must be feeling. I have been wrong to judge and blame him so quickly. It is one of my many faults to fault people for wrongs that they didn’t do.
