We’re so close on this platform that one tiny sudden movement could send us into the unknown mist swirling below. Tobias looks at me, not wanting to look down. I look at him, not wanting to look above. Together, surely we can get out of here, can’t we?
“Now what?” I ask him, partly to help us both be distracted by our racing hearts and fear buzzing through our veins. His mouth twitches in what must be a look of deep thought. The shrieking is ear-piercing, I can hear them as they start to soar upwards. Why are they leaving? Then the noise gets louder then it stops. I risk a glance and suddenly I know it was a mistake. Of course they hadn’t left. How foolish I was for that thought to even cross my mind. In fact, they’d done the opposite; they were coming straight towards us, from right above us, coming towards us like black feathered darts.
“Let me deal with it.” Tobias replies finally, I see he has seen the appending daggers, closing the space between us and them.
“What? How?” I question but I’m not too bothered about the reply, just that we get out of here and quick.
“Trust me.” I don’t have to reply, he knows I trust him. I trust him more than myself. Steadily he stands up and from his trouser pocket he produces a blooded blade. I suddenly realise it’s the same one that I jumped on to save Tobias, the one that used to belong to Samuel. I didn’t see him pick it up in the first place but I’m thankful. The noise of wings cutting through the air seems to be getting louder. Then I hear the cries and the swooshing as Tobias seems to be stabbing them. I look around for something to use as a weapon but up here there’s nothing, so I keep crouched down, feeling helpless like a child. I feel feathers and splats of blood hit the bare bits of my skin but I focus on Tobias feet, tensing up in case he misplaces his foot and I need to make a quick dash forward to save him.
I don’t know how long it is until the noises stop completely, well apart from the sound of panting coming from above me. Finally I look upwards to see Tobias covered in tiny splats of ink blood and night coloured feathers swaying slightly peacefully downwards, following the diving limp corpses of the last few nightmares. Tobias offers his hand to me, but doesn’t look down; I take it gently and pull myself up. I start to brush the debris away from myself and him, while he concentrates on my face.
“Thank you.” I whisper and he nods solemnly in reply. After it brush away all I can I look around for some kind of escape. Is there any way we can get off? We have no option. Well we do, our option is to stay here, where no one knows where we are, until we die of starvation or dehydration or maybe even suicide if it comes to it. Then a thought comes into my mind. If the floor opened up on us last time, what is to stop it happening again? I wait a few seconds, comforting Tobias with my hand on his face, but nothing moves apart from our hearts beating too fast. Silence seems to be just what we both need to tackle our own fears and thoughts.
When the floor doesn’t move I start to get restless, I want to get away from here. I need to. So I begin to stomp on the floor, it judders but doesn’t move. Tobias’ attention snaps from wherever it had wandered to me. His eyes are filled with fear but I can see a flicker of curiosity mixed with hope. Nevertheless I carry on ramming my feet into the ground and the pillar shudders harder with every stamp, grey dust spews from the cracks appearing in the brickwork. The dust swarms around us but somehow it just makes me more determined to break it completely. Memories of my rage in my old Abnegation house rise up in my mind; they remind me of my destruction. Not just the destruction I caused to that room but the destruction of my life, it seems to be falling apart and the only things keeping it together it Tobias and the will to rid this world of Samuel. Then suddenly a giant shock of a crack appear underneath us, where are feet are kept together to stop us toppling over the edge.
