“What? Tris what?” Tobias’ questions urges me to speak though they never giving me enough time to actually speak.
“The baby just kicked.” I stutter. “I just felt it.” I run my hand smoothly over my naked stomach. Tobias’ face turns from concern to complete shock and his hand joins mine on my stomach. The wonder underneath my skin, the imaginations are endless, just like my love for my new family.
“Wow, have you realised how big you’re getting.” At first I’m about to take it to heart and then I realise what he’s talking about. I never noticed how my stomach was inflating like a water balloon but now I see it and it makes me smile.
“I have now.” I reply, as there’s a knock on the door.
“Come in.” Tobias shouts and Claire comes back into the room, eyeing me up and down and making me feel uncomfortable. The hair which had escaped her ponytail was now put back perfectly into place and there was no longer a single crease in her pristine uniform. She seems to half glare at me then turn her attention to Tobias and she beams at him, but she makes sure it’s an attractive beam. She sits back down in her chair and takes a hold of the small gel and little box again.
“Seeing as you were not sexual active 3 months ago, how do you explain your 3 month old baby?” She shoots at me, her eyes peering into my brain.
“I forgot.” I respond. I don’t want to speak to her so I only speak the minimal amount of words that I can. She raises her eyebrow and looks to Tobias for confirm it.
“We’ve had a hard day today so we’re not quite the sharpest when it comes to remembering.” He explains, which seems to reassure Claire.
“Poor you.” She says but not to me. This is starting to make my blood boil and I can tell if she keeps flirting with Tobias there will be trouble.
“Can we get on with it please?” Tobias asks, his voice as hard as stone.
Shocked by his harshness Claire fumbles around and says, “Of course.” I give Tobias an appreciative smile and he nods subtly in reply. “I’m going to put this gel on your stomach.” She mumbles as she squeezes the bottle and a strangely warm blue liquid oozes onto my bare skin. Claire then proceeds to rub the gel around, spreading it out, an alien hand on my stomach makes my muscles tense up and I want to swipe it away. It’s like she’s intruding on my private life, like something that shouldn’t be touched. Then she puts the box onto of the gel and on the screen to my side a grey and black moving image starts to show. Is this what is inside me? The image moves more, in odd curved movements until there seems to be a black space, like a black hole. There’s something in the darkness though, a moving white blob, shaped differently to everything else. The thing is over-poweringly captivating, something draws me into it and I don’t want to look away. I can see the faint outline of a human being, this is my baby.
“Incredible.” I say under my breath. Too incredible.
Claire points to the screen and circles the white blob with her thin fragile finger and says, “That’s your baby.” I force myself to tear my eyes away from my child and take a glance at Tobias. He seems entranced by the baby, his face emotionless. I wonder what he’s thinking. His face breaks suddenly into a smile of awe. His eyes meet mine and it’s like the first time I saw he, I appreciate his stunning powerful aura. I still don’t believe he is mine, that he loves me. When I found out I was pregnant I never thought I would this child so much but I already would die for it.
