I feel Tobias’ muscle tense even though I am not even near him. My mind searches for answers about how everything got here and what the hell is happening but I end up with nothing. I figure all we need to do is make the floor move again, that way we can escape but what if what is down here is worse than where we are now?  But for Tobias, this is as worse as it gets.

The black shadow comes into view as the fire flickers its dancing light onto the shadow’s sinister grin. Marcus. His eyes look demonic, the colour of fire reflecting like nothing I’ve ever seen before apart from the little bits of fire reflecting in Uriah’s eyes after the explosion. The thought of Uriah takes me out of the room for a moment, stuck in the horror but I’m quickly brought back to see Marcus wielding his whip in waves right in front of Tobias. Even from here I can see the beads of sweat gathering on Tobias’ forehead, a mixture of heat and fear.

“Hey!” I shout, it’s the only thing I can do being tied up. Marcus turns his head slowly and looks at me like I interrupted his entertainment. Suddenly he smirks and walks over to me and stops when his face is only a few centimetres away from me, his breath stinking of alcohol.

“How glad I am that it will be me that gets to kill you this time, Beatrice.  How glad I will be that it is finally my turn with no one to stand in my way.” He glances at his whip then at Tobias before he turns back to me and says “Now who would I like to kill first?” I look at Tobias and nod, he returns the nod. With the signal I lurch forward and bite down hard on the bridge of his nose. He punches me straight in the throat, causing me to let go of my grip on him and grab my throat in fear of losing breath.  “You bitch. You know what, I’ll kill you last.” Last, so that I can watch Tobias die and go through the pain of losing him slowly as Marcus starts to kill me.

Upon his decision, he steps away from me, I look quickly at Tobias and he mouths “Distract him” and I know that to keep him alive I need to do what he says.

“Why?” I almost shout, inwardly I cringe as I don’t know what the follow up to the question is supposed to be.

Marcus swivels around on his heels and says “Why what? Don’t waste time.”

“Why… was Samuel kept a secret from all of us.” I ask, I realise I desperately want the answer to this. Actually I desperately need the answer.

“Isn’t that a question you should be asking him?” Marcus laughs.  I give an indignant snort in response.  Marcus never used to be like this, or maybe he was when Tobias was little. He’s just like Samuel, I can now see the resemblance, and my parents could never have an evil child, whereas Marcus could no problem. I can’t believe I ever trusted this man, even against the will of Tobias.

“Maybe but I’m asking you.”

He seems to think for a minute before he says, “Seeing as I’m going to kill you there’s no point in telling you I guess. Samuel was kept a secret because Natalie and I met at the Bureau before we entered the experiment. Your mother and I used to have a relationship while we were waiting to enter the experiment and during that time she accidentally got pregnant. She found out a week before I was supposed to go into Chicago and I told her that we had a job to and that she should find a new man and pretend it was his . She joined the experiment 2 months later, later than expected as there was a hold up with some technological thing.  Then she found your father and they fell in love and she told him that she was pregnant, for 7 months he believed it was his and when she was in labour she refused to go to the hospital, she refused because the Erudite were already suspicious about her sudden appearance into Chicago and were keeping an eye on her, if she’d had gone to the hospital they would’ve done tests on the baby and realised that the baby was 9 months old and she had seemed to be only in Chicago for 7 months. So she had to give birth at home and keep him secret but she then created a fake birth certificate to keep her and Samuel safe. But by this point your father had worked out it wasn’t his child and seeing as he was Erudite he had heard the rumours about Natalie’s mysterious appearance and so in the end she told him about the outside of Chicago and the experiment. Those Erudite rumours also meant that I could never meet up with Natalie during the experiment for a long time until the Erudite had given up that both of us were accepted to have always lived in Chicago.” He sighs, as if he is in pain at remembering the past. For a second I feel sympathy towards him, I know how he feels but then I remember what he has done and what he is doing and the feelings disappear. “So in the end, Samuel lived in the secret compartment under the stairs, he never understood why though. At the age of 10, Natalie told me that your father and her were going to have a child together and that for his safety, Samuel was going to be sent to the Bureau to be looked after for the time being but they never knew if they’d actually be able to see him again. Before he went, I had to tell him the truth, I couldn’t bear to never let him know the truth, and afterwards he promised that he would try to come back when he was older and then 20 years or so later, he fulfilled his promise and he came back with so much anger at being pushed away by his mother and so called father and he wanted revenge but finding out they were dead he settled for the next best thing, Caleb and yourself. And now seeing as Caleb is dead, the only thing left to do is kill you then his life will be complete and he will love me more than ever.”
