Tobias and I are engaged. It still seemed unreal to me but I guess the unreal has turned real in the past days. My mind is all over the place, unable to process so much new information, I’ve got my whole life to try and process I though. But I don’t know how long my second life will be, will I even see my wedding day? My 20th birthday? I wish I knew, but that’s my Erudite side showing.
I still sit on the table, I pat it next to where I sit and he slides himself onto it, our thighs brushing, even that causes a rushing sensation through my body. I really need to control this. He pulls me into him, into his warmth, putting his arm around me. Sometimes it’s nice just to be next to each other and not kissing all the time, though I can’t say I don’t enjoy that thoroughly. Who wouldn’t? I mean it’s Tobias Eaton, possibly the most good-looking boy in the world, and I now know how big the world is. We share the same air, he pulls my chin so I face him and he brushes a piece of hair out of my face before I even feel it was there. I smile at him somewhat shyly and kiss his neck.
Caleb comes into the room holding many monitors, Tobias freezes next to me and his loose arm around me grips on, shielding me. Caleb spreads them on the trolley in the corner. He scans our figures and then sighs. Is he jealous? I never imagined Caleb with a girlfriend, it just doesn’t seem right. He takes brings one of the monitors over to us, Tobias’ muscles are still like bricks and I rub his arm in reassurance. I unbutton the first button of the black blouse I changed into this morning, I only feel comfortable wearing black, and Caleb places the monitor on my chest. I avoid Tobias’ eye contact, but I can see him staring at what’s going on, I suddenly feel self-conscious. I felt awkward before when it was only my brother but now my fiancé as well, just what I want. No, what I want is to get out of here. However as every day passes it seems more and more unlikely that I’ll escape.
“What are you doing?” Tobias asks.
“Monitoring.” Caleb replies.
“I gathered that part.”
“Well then you must be an Erudite transfer.” Tobias scowls and clenches his fists.
“Tobias it’s not worth it.” I but in to stop anything from happening. “He’s just checking if I’m okay.” Both of them reply to me by huffing. Well, this is fun. The mood doesn’t change for the next half an hour as I’m checked on and Tobias watches Caleb’s every move. He’s too protective but it makes me feel safe and that’s all I want right now.
“Beatrice, how would you like to go outside?” Caleb finally speaks that sacred word. Outside. But where outside?
“I thought you would never ask.” I grin and nod vigorously. "And you need to stop calling me Beatrice. That's not my name anymore."
"Noted, sorry...Tris."
“Are you sure she’s healthy enough to go outside?” Tobias asks. I give him a stabbing stare then feel guilty for my excessive meanness and take his hand.
“I’m fine, it’s too cramped in here. I need to get out.”
“Brilliant, it’s going to be a shock for most people but we have sent word to everyone telling them what has happened. You must be excited, I know Christina has been bugging me for the past few days but I though it would be nice if your boyfriend visited first, seeing how close you are.” I can see the last words killed him, reminding him of how close we used to be before…. Everything happened.
“Fiancé.” Tobias corrects Caleb. Caleb just seems startled and I hold up the ring finger and he stares at it in disbelief.
“Well congratulations on your engagement then. I’m happy for you, Beatrice. Tris, sorry” He is such a bad liar. But I let it slide, not wanting to add more hatred into the atmosphere.
