Yawning I wake up in Tobias’ bed, the sheets warm but cold on his side of the bed. Smiling I turn to look at him. He’s not there. I start to panic, scenario and scenario playing in my head, filling me with fear. I feel his side of the bed, its stone cold, meaning he’s been gone for quite a while. Has this got anything to do with Samuel? I can only pray it isn’t, he’s already taken someone from me and I’m not prepared to lose another.
“Tobias?” I call out, hoping desperately for an answer but nothing responds but the sound of a bird. I pull the covers off and search for my clothes but I can’t find them. So I get up, my arms wrapping around my naked body and I open Tobias’ wardrobe, picking a long grey shirt, I slide my arms through it and button it up. This looks like it would be an Abnegation shirt; maybe it is. Looking at Tobias’ apartment I think he’s having difficulty changing and he’s still stuck in the past. To be fair, if Tobias had died releasing the serum I would have the same problem. It’s up to me to help him move on; to help him get over his pain that he hides so well.
There’s a knock at the door, my first reaction is the press against the door but I remember that now in Chicago not everyone is going to aim a gun at me. Caleb told me they have people who deliver the mail, maybe it’s one of them? Still on edge, I walk to the door and look through the small hole in the door. On the other side of the door is Christina, I forgot Tobias invited her over yesterday. I unlock the door, feeling stupid, and invite Christina in.
“Is Tobias with you?” I ask her.
“No. Is he supposed to be?”
“He’s not here. It’s no big deal though, I bet he’s gone to the shops or something.” I think I’m trying to convince myself that he’s ok more than trying to convince Christina.
“I wouldn’t worry, Tris. By the looks of what happened last night I can tell he’s not in a hurry to go anywhere.” Christina says, grinning mischievously. That’s the problem, if he didn’t want to leave the apartment, why did he? I just adds to my suspicion that he’s been taken by Samuel and his henchmen.
“Yeah.” I reply, uncertainly though.
“Don’t be worried Tris.” She comforts. I nod. “So .... what happened last night?”
“A lot.” I reply vaguely, making her wait.
“Oh my god, spill now!” She claps her hands together, which looks ridiculous in my opinion.
“We..” Thinking of the right words, trying to get them right. “Progressed our relationship.” I’m pleased with how I phrased it.
“You did the deed!” She exclaims.
“The deed?”
“You don’t know what that means? She looks shocked then it looks like she’s worked it out that I’ve been dead for years so I’m not with the slang like she is. “Ok, you had sex didn’t you? Is that easier to understand?”
“Yes it is. And yes we did.” I decide to reply to both of her questions. She squeals, what has got into her. She’s not normally like this. It makes me wonder if the people she hangs around with are like this because you wouldn’t act like this in Dauntless; you’d get called a pansycake. She must have some strange friends.
“What was it like?” She asks.
“Amazing.” I admit although I’m starting to get a little uncomfortable. I search my brain for a reason to change the subject but nothing comes to mind.
“Urgh.” Christina moans.
“What?”
“Never mind.” Is she jealous? No she can’t be. Can she?
