The truck ride isn’t far, maybe 10 minutes or so. When you’re blind and tied together you can’t help but count. The roads we drive over seem to get bumpy and I’m juddered and flown into someone’s leg.  They push me harshly and I refuse to move. If they’re going to kidnap me they’re going to get a bad time of it.

“Move.” A man says but I don’t recognise his voice. I don’t move an inch, being stubborn was one of the best traits sometimes. He pushes me harder and I slide forward but I shuffle back. “You stupid girl, move!” He shouts.

“It’s comfy here.” I reply, sweetly as possible in this situation. I try to hold in the grin then remember they can’t see my face.

“You know what rude girls get?” The man says threatening. I shake my head, I’m not sure if he can see it through the bag but it’s worth a try. “They get punished.” He growls, it’s obviously supposed to scare me but I just find myself smiling. How can I still smile after what has already happened today?

Was it only early this morning I found out I was pregnant?

Now it’s dark outside, how much things can change even in the space of a day. I found that out the hard way. And by the seems of it I’m about the find out another thing the hard way.

The man’s fist collides with my chest, the force so strong that I’m thrown aside. I hear the man get up and he starts to kick my body, again and again. I don’t call out in pain though the bruises and cuts gathered in the last few days are screaming. I move my arms to protect the baby. The only part of Tobias I may have left. The thought is scarier than what is happening now, scarier than anything I’ve ever experienced.

“Felix, leave her alone.” Samuel scolds. I’m surprised by Samuel’s concern for me, why is he doing this? “I want to kill her myself.” I spoke too soon; the kindness has turned to viciousness in a few seconds.

“Good luck with that.” I mutter under my breath.  The truck comes to a sudden halt and I’m turfed out of the vehicle and along the gravelled pavement, until I’m picked up and carried down corridors. I can only guess they’re corridors by the movement of the person carrying me.

I’m put down in a chair and the handcuff are taken from me.  And my arms are then tied to the thing I sit on.  I circle my wrists, bringing back the blood.  I think, while I’m waiting here, how much blood I’ve lost over the years. It’s a strange thought but it keeps me from the unknown answer to the question of what is going to happen to me? I think about asking the question to whoever may still be near me but I think again, not expecting any other answer than you’re going to die.

Those words cast my mind back to when I was determined to sacrifice myself for what I thought was the safety of Chicago’s Divergent. I remember how Tobias saved me from my death, along with the help of people who I did not expect to help me.  It reminds me that I did not save Tobias from his possible death. I tell myself  that I could never have foreseen the bomb explosion but this nagging inside me says I knew something was wrong but instead I let Tobias go forward. It felt so wrong in that apartment that it could never have been right.  In my head I see us mimicking Harold and the lady only minutes before this dark cloud ascended on our future.  The smile I thought was natural has become forced and strained but I fight to keep it there because I know if it falls so will the tears fogging my eyesight.

“I think it’s time for young Beatrice to finally see her beloved older brother for the first time. Don’t you think Zeke?”  Samuel’s voice sounds so familiar and yet so foreign. I’m not sure I want to see Samuel. I’m too worried how much he will resemble every member of my family, just to make it even more clear that I’m related to this demon.

“Indeed I think so too.” Zeke replies, the anger about being betrayed by him grows with every word that I hear.  What would Uriah think about this? Knowing Uriah he would be cross for a minute then forgive them and crack a joke.  If only Uriah was here, it would make such a difference to life as I now know it.

“Ready Beatrice?” I don’t bother to reply, nervous that any movement or speech will affect me later. “Well, take the blindfold off.” Personally I wouldn’t call it a blindfold but I’m not going to argue. I can’t control my breathing, the rush of a feeling which I don’t recognise is thrilling me and I’m not sure whether that’s a good thing or not.

I feel someone’s hand on the top of my black bag and I tense, closing my eyes. The wind of the bag alerts me my eyes are free to look upon their nightmare.

I open my eyes and I immediately I wish I had never done it. A regret that I will never be able to get over.  In fact ever existing seems to be the biggest regret.  The anger inside of me is too much to control and any second it will explode and the men in the corner wielding guns will shoot me, once again I will leave this world. I would leave Tobias, once again. But most of all I’d would’ve killed the baby as well. I have to control myself for the baby and for Tobias. If I can figure out a way to get out and kill Samuel at the same time then maybe I will find Tobias, and not find him in his grave.

“You see Beatrice, you were never meant to be here.” Samuel says then puts something in his mouth. It’s like a small voice box then starts to speak. “ You were supposed to be dead, I made sure David knew about your plan to release the serum, I made sure he would be there when you got through the death serum.  I made sure that there was no way you would be alive. And yet here you are, alive, but not for much longer.”

The voice box changed the sound of his voice completely.

It sounded like Matthew’s voice.

It all makes sense.

Matthew is my brother.

Matthew is Samuel Prior.
