Chapter 38

"Are you going to tell me what's up?" Tony asked. For the past two weeks, I had been eating lunch at school in his classroom with him and my aunt Charlie. They always had lunch together and since I wasn't really in the mood to be around too many people, I decided to join them.

I shrugged and stabbed the pasta I bought from the cafeteria. I wasn't even that hungry, so I wasted money paying for it.

"Come on, Ryder," Tony said. "Something's obviously wrong. You rarely pay attention in class and you've been eating lunch with us instead of Julia and Elizabeth.

I'm just not in the mood to be near anyone," I said.

"For two weeks?" Charlie asked. "If it has been going on for that long, you should at least talk to someone about it."

"Does it have to do with Mae?" Tony asked. When I didn't answer, it gave him an answer. "Did you two break up?"

       "I don't know."

"I don't know?" Tony repeated. "It's a yes or no question."

"No, the answer is I don't know because I don't freaking now," I said, accidentally snapping at him. "She hasn't talk to me for two weeks. We talked on Skype once and after that, she started ignoring me. She won't answer my calls, my texts, nothing. I even tried calling her home and whenever her mom answers, she tells me that Mae is busy."

Mae never told me an answer. After the Skype call where she told me she might have been pregnant, she started ignoring me. I told her I would be there for her no matter what the outcome was. I loved her and she knew it. She knew I loved her, but she wasn't talking to me.

It hurt. The whole long-distance thing was already hurting the both of us, even though we made it work. Correction: We were making it work. Now I wasn't too sure if we would work.

"Maybe there was something during the last Skype call that could be the reason," Tony said.

What if Mae was pregnant? What if that was why she was ignoring me? That would make no sense, since I told her I would help her. She knew that if she was, I would support every decision she made.

        "So?" Tony asked.

I sighed, not wanting to answer. I didn't tell my parents yet. I wanted to wait until after I got an answer from Mae, but I never got one.

"I'm guessing you have an idea," Tony said. "Maybe the idea you have is the reason why."

"It can't be," I said. "It would be a stupid reason why, so it can't be."

       "What is it?" Charlie asked.

Should I tell them? Or should I wait to tell my parents?

I couldn't tell my parents. Mom was so stressed out because of me when I came home drunk that one time. If I tell her that my girlfriend might be pregnant, she would probably get even more stressed out.

But keeping all of this to myself was killing me. I couldn't keep it in anymore.

"The last time we Skyped, Mae told me that there was a possibility that she could be pregnant," I said, not making eye contact with either of them. "She said her period was late. I told her that nobody what the outcome was, I would be there for her and support her. That no matter what, I would still love her. She promised to tell me as soon as she found out, but that was the last time I talked to her."
