JK Rowling said in an interview, that Lily Evans would probably fall in love with Snape if he hadn't been interested in the Dark Arts. But after Hogwarts, she married James Potter, so she couldn't fall in love with Snape.
So back to the V and P. The two things (or should I say people) that kept Lily away from Snape were Voldemort and Potter.
