Why do people hate on Ron?

This question I've seen people ask all the time. Some think he's awesome but many hate/hated him. I used to hate him. All until I reread the series and realised how amazing he was (and after a lot of convincing from Tumblr users).

Many people think that Ron is hated on only because he left Harry, was jealous, dated Lavender, etc. These are only the kneading factors to the reason why Ron is hated/disliked by so many.

Someone made a very good point the other day while talking to me that we hate characters that reflect us entirely and react in the way we react. We prefer to relate to heroes who resemble some of our personality but are braver and more loyal. For example, many people would hate a character that's cowardly, would throw someone under the bus when threatened, lies, even though you would probably make that decision too.

My point is that, people don't hate Ron because he did something wrong. They dislike him because he's too relatable. He isn't perfect, he gets jealous, he thinks he's weak, he dated Lavender even though it hurt Hermione (she didn't show that she liked him, though so it isn't his fault). Ron is hated on because he does things most of us would do and we subconsciously hate on characters because they're too similar to us.

At least that's my opinion. Tell me what you think. If you ever disliked Ron or still dislike him, might this be the reason? Because it is for me. I'd love to hear your opinions.

«Characters we love are our role models. Characters we hate are the mirrors of ourselves.»

All was well,
