Chapter 5 - TEARS STOLE THE HEART of mines

Asher

A can of coke was placed right in front of me, but I didn’t bother to touch it. My mind was too busy thinking of my family’s reaction. In case you don’t remember, I just killed a teacher in school in front of a whole classroom.  I knew Ms. Dory would be a hard target. Her skill in hiding weapons was worrisome, but I managed to unravel everything. My third target was dead in a matter of minutes.

You’re just like you dad. You’re the same beast like him.

I winced as my Mom’s words resonated in my head. She clearly wanted me to make a difference. Every time she saw me coming from the front door, I couldn’t imagine how painful it was for her to welcome me home. I wondered how she could look at me like her own son when I resembled everything of my father. How could she see her son differently from her wrecked husband?

No, kidding. I love my Dad, but he was still the same bastard that tried to kill our whole family. He was harsh to me most of all. From all my childhood experiences, I’ve never received his embrace. The only things I could remember from Dad were our fights and violence in the house. He called me names.

Stupid.

Useless.

You’re nothing.

I swallowed his words, the poison that made me who I was. Never did I know that the bad things in life were preparing me for the future. Dad wasn’t as bad and menacing as I thought he was. No matter how much hatred I have towards Dad, he would always be my father. And that bond left a soft part in my heart for him.

Our family saw Dad as the core that destroys everything. We just didn’t know what events he faced everyday. He was working so hard, so badly that he would do anything to allow our family to survive. Dad was rarely home, and whenever he went home, chaos built in. I would fight, and Mom would try to push him out of the house. We saw him as beast that destroyed our lives.

Now I know otherwise. He was a compassionate father. There was a reason why he was doing everything. He was forced to work illegally for a particular reason that I have not, yet, fully understand. After he died, his boss found me. And I was forced to continue my father’s job: killing people from the list. I realized my father’s real feelings, but Mom didn’t. My dad was the best dad in the world. He was too kind, too naïve to be true.

I didn’t have any intention to tell her the whole truth. Mom might still hate Dad. She might not know the real truth, but I still wouldn’t tell her the truth, even if that will change her perspective of Dad. The truth can kill. It can kill furiously.

The thought created a new wave of headache. I placed my head on the surface of the interrogation table. The chains that were connected to the table bounded my hands. I cringed as I thought of Mom getting a call from the police station. Secretly, I closed my eyes and prayed for her health. It was getting worst and worst. Sierra wasn’t helping either. She was in a rather confusing state. I was living a broken life with a fractured family. I was the only one capable to earn the money for the family.

I don’t want to make them worry. I was a useless child. Dad would’ve beaten me senselessly if he was still here. The hard life he had lived changed him, and now it’s changing me too. I was turning into a cold criminal, the guy who didn’t deserve kindness.

With my bound hands, I grabbed the can of coke and opened its lid. A fizz broke the silence of my interrogation room. A secret camera was probably placed somewhere around the room. There was a black screen in front of me, which was probably where all the police hid to examine me. And I hope my act as a quiet kid can suffice all their questions.

“You’re good to go,” a voice emerged into the room. I turned around to find a policeman opening the door. He smiled weakly at me, almost embarrassed. “It was all a mistake. We’re very sorry for taking your time at school. From your school’s hidden cameras, we easily figured out it was self defense.”

Well, that’s easy to get away from the police.

The police gestured me to give him my hands. I did so, and using his golden keys, he unlocked the shackles on my wrists. As soon as the restrains were off me, I got up from my seat and stretched. It was one of the most tiring days of my life, indeed.

“And Asher,” the policeman called me before I could exit the place

I turned around and nodded at him politely. “Yes, sir?”

“Your friends are waiting for you outside. They’ve been waiting for you since two hours ago,” he said.

I blinked. Friends? I would guess correctly that Ryan was one of these friends, but so far as I could recall, I didn’t have much friends. I was too busy doing my so called job.

I was busy killing people one by one, draining their bloods, and bathing in them with delight. My business to turn myself into a monster isolated me from the world.

Taking a step out of the interrogation room, I took a deep breath of the fresh air, the free air. I wouldn’t want to experience the same thing that happened today again. Mom and Sierra would’ve collapsed if they heard their favorite boy was thrown in prison again.

“Asher!” I heard Ryan’s squeaky high pitched voice. Before I knew it, I was engulfed by a huge hug. I expected it to be Ryan, but when hands fell on me, I realized it was someone else. She had the softest skin in the world. Her hug was suffocating but also comforting. I could’ve stayed there for a few hours without wanting to let go. Her warmth seeped into me, and I closed my eyes for a moment to enjoy the sensation.

Apparently, Ryan was just that evil. “Guys, don’t make up in the police station,” Ryan said. He hesitated for moment as if he was trying to make up his own words. “It’s kind of inappropriate to make kids here—“

Cinder’s voice entered my ears. I was almost too glad that she was there with me, holding me tight against her. “Shut up, Ryan. Your disgusting mind is making me insane,” she barked.

“I’m hurt, Cinder,” Ryan said, holding his head like he was really hurt.

I laughed. “C’mon guys. Let’s go home.”

Cinder let go of me, but instead of letting me fully go, she held one of my arms. “Welcome back,” she whispered in my ears. Then she pulled me into a short embrace before making me run with her to the car.

“Welcome back,” I repeated after her.

But I knew I would be back soon.

Back to the place where I belonged.

A place where all the broken lives stayed in.

Hell.
