Chapter 19—EVERY MOMENT OF YOU allows me to live again
Song: Every moment of you, an OST from You Who Came From The Stars
ASH
“What did you do? Did you add something to that wine? Why did that woman died?” the Manager scolded me. Despite the wall that separated the kitchen from his office, everyone outside seemed to stop working and averted their attention to the dark window of the Manager’s office. The dark lighting in the office was not helping the mood. It was dark, and the cold air created tingles on my skin.
Although the extreme pressure from the Manager was intensifying, I stared around the small office with awe. Wine bottles covered the entire place. When I saw the original year of when they were made, I was impressed. Those wines were enough to make anyone drunk in one sip. With these wines, it would be very easy to kill someone. You can hit the victim with the bottle, or make him drunk before killing him. I just hoped I wouldn’t count as one of those victims.
“Answer me! What did you do?” the Manager literally screamed, deafening my ears. I looked at him, straight in the eyes, and held my gaze. Menacing words were about to escape my mouth, but I tamed it in me. I would not let my emotions control me, and I believed I was stronger than this. Bracing myself, I took all the scolding in. The Manager slammed both his hands on his table when I dozed off.
I don’t work for you. I did poison that woman. And if I did, I don’t want to care. I’m heartless, lifeless.
By this time, all the workers outside had crowded against the office window, wondering what was going on. All eyes turned from their cooking towards me, full of interest. Some of the waiters stopped at their tracks, their ears ready to hear my nasty conversation with the Manager. I imagined a smile crawling up their faces as the Manager towered above me. It was ironic, really.
Mom taught me to give all my best. The world insisted the other way around. People wanted me to fail. They would be satisfied seeing me living a miserable life. I tried to please the world, and it gave me misery in return. And I had enough of these treatments. I wanted to break these restrains, but they were bounding me too tightly. I was a prisoner of misery, and now, I started believing that I deserved all the terrible things in my life.
I damage the world.
I scar everyone in my way.
I’m a beast lashing out in the world.
The Manager had twisted into something unrecognizable. I pretended to be sorry and bowed my head. My eyes were staring at the floor as the scolding went on. Trying my best to be polite, I kept nodding. I wanted to address him, but I had forgotten his name.
He glared at me, and I blinked at him, my face unreadable. When he figured out that I was not regretting anything, his face turned into so many colors, and I actually stepped back before he could lash out. “Do you understand me, Mr. Martinez? Have you been listening?” he barked furiously.
I nodded but was not actually paying much attention. “Uh, yes.”
“Yes, what?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I have a name, young man. Address me politely and properly!” he demanded. I swallowed and glanced up at his angry face. My eyes quickly searched for the nametag that hung on his shirt a moment ago. But it wasn’t there. The color had drained from my face immediately. Instead of addressing him, I only stared blankly at him.
