ASHER
Chapter 7—We are all FIGHTERS of this world
Tears began to blur away my vision, making everything I saw like blurs of different colorful lights. My heart was aching so badly that I thought it was breaking inside, killing me slowly. Every single disappointment of my life appeared in front of my eyes. I saw myself as a young kid fighting with my Dad. He kicked me hard as I curled myself into a ball, trying to shield myself from his ferocious beating.
Another memory of my Mom and Dad screaming at each other came into view. I was there too. The only thing that separated their fight and I was a thin cloth hanging from the ceiling that marked the start of my bedroom territory. I remembered covering my ears as hard as I can, sucking back the tears that were fighting to come out. The whole memory ended with Dad slamming our apartment door. Then we left him forever, away from our lives. He was still looking after us from far away, but we never knew fully until he died.
“Ash, are you here yet?” I heard the voice of my sister coming out of my old, almost-broken phone. Its black and white screen showed me the end call sign. Feeling depressed, I wanted to end the call. No, I wanted to end everything. My life was an utter mess, and it was currently useless to continue this sad destiny.
I sighed and tried to make myself focus back on the streets. Slowly, I stirred the wheel to the right where a hospital came into view. “I’m here,” I whispered.
Sierra’s cries came out of my phone, and I cringed at her pain. She was so little, so sick. Sometimes I wondered why she was here with us. She didn’t deserve to be here. Her intelligent was unreachable, and she was the light that kept my family from breaking apart into even smaller pieces. What allowed her to deserve this family? What allowed her to accept me as her brother?
She was too soft, too naïve for her own good. “Come faster, Ash,” Sierra cried. I could tell that she was whimpering, which was a bad sign. My hands began to tremble as I parked the car. I pulled a glove to cover my injured hand before running like a wild dog into the hospital.
Nurses glanced at me. Some of them glared at me, their stares accusing me of being a disturbance, but some of them quickly recognized me, giving me sad smiles. They knew what happened to my family, the issue with Mom and Sierra. Although I knew it was pointless to fight for their health, I was still fighting head to toe for them. The doctors said Sierra might still live, but Mom was another case.
“Ash!” I felt Sierra’s arms circling around me, giving me a tight hug. When I looked down at her, I noticed how red her eyes had grown. I flinched at the sight of her getting weaker. She seemed to be extremely tired, too exhausted for her own health problems.
I picked her up from the ground, ignoring the pain that quickly surged from my injured hand. The pain inside my heart numbed everything. Sierra gave me a small smile like nothing could ever hurt her. She didn’t know how fragile she was. Another wave of sadness washed through me.
