Chapter 2—The girl who sneaks into his truck and BREAKS EVEN

CINDER

While Allison went to school with her new red Ferrari, I was practically rushing to the nearest bus stop with sweat dribbling down my forehead, hoping that there was another bus directed to school. Three buses had quickly dashed away from me when I reached the “BUS STOP” sign. My throat was too dry after screaming curses at all the yellow buses that left me behind.

My eyes were watering, and I felt more sweat running down my nose. Wiping it away, I ran to another block where another school bus should be parked. A relief gushed out of me when I saw the yellow school bus beside the pedestrian street. I started slowing down my pace. There was no one near the bus stop, and I was smiling to myself when I walked closer to the bus.

My foot was just one meter away when I heard engine bursts, and. before I realized a thing, dark smoke that smelled like gasoline stormed towards my face. I imagined the driver pushing his head from the window and giving me an evil mischievous smile before driving away to hell knows where. Soon, the gas dissolved in the air, and again, I found myself cursing the same words to the forth bus that left me.

“Are you kidding me?” I screamed. “You think you’re going to go to heaven with that attitude? Leaving a lonely girl without a ride to school might earn you a place in hell!”

I started jumping awkwardly around the pavement with exasperation.

When can life get better?

Maybe you deserve a life in hell.

I knew the answer, of course, but I wouldn’t let my pessimistic side take over. The whole fact that my real family was no closer to reality was already making my heart sick, and the thought of being enslaved to your own mother and sister forever made me thought of suicide.

I mean, how painful could it be to swallow a really sharp kitchen knife? The pain would consume me for a few minutes, but I would be numb to it sooner or later. Darkness would consume me, and the agony would go away as soon as I reached the other side of the world, the other dimension. My painful life had taught me a hundred different ways to get over with life, and it was tempting to hold that knife, and to end everything. But I knew it was wrong. Mom wouldn’t be happy.

“You’re special,” she said.

No, I’m not, Mom. You got the wrong girl.

I sighed and started walking away from the bus stop, my heavy steps echoing as I ignored cars passing by. My heart ached when I saw a red Ferrari full of girls with tight-fitting clothes honking at me before passing by. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Allison on the driver’s wheel, giving me the look of mischief before dashing away. I gritted my teeth and tried to hold every single word that was tempting to spill from my mouth.

“Those girls are hot, man.”

I turned my head around to glare at whoever who said that, and just then, I noticed my own surroundings. Tall apartments and skyscrapers towered above me, giving me the look like I’m better than you. Out of darkness casted by the buildings’ shadow, I saw the only area where the sun was still shining on. My eyes widened when I saw a huge red vehicle.
