Chapter 21—Counting my luck like COUNTING STARS

Ash

“So, what did you do to the girl? Details, bro, details. I need the experience of a love master!” Ryan caught up with me as I walked faster, trying to avoid him. Our footsteps echoed in the empty hallway. When I quickened my pace and broke into a jog, he ran with all his might and stepped in front of me, blocking my path. My mind was swirling with many thoughts on how to keep this guy away from me. I was losing my patience with him.

Raising an eyebrow, he folded his arms and grinned at me. His face twisted with a mischievous look. “C’mon, Master Ash. Just one tip, please. I have to flirt with this girl—“

“What girl?” I snapped, annoyed. My eyes were throwing daggers at him. I squeezed my hands to prevent it from lashing out to choke him. And I meant that.

Ryan grinned like an idiot, and a phone landed in front of my face. I squinted my eyes to adjust to the brightness of his screen. A picture of a girl appeared on the surface of the phone, and a gasp escaped my lips as my eyes landed on it. I nearly choked when I realized who it was. Josephine would never like this. Ryan was being too hopeful and desperate for love.

“Josephine’s too pretty for you, man,” I clarified, trying to knock some sense into him. “Stay away from her, or you’ll get hurt. She’s gonna reject you, Ryan.”

He pouted like a kid and pointed at his face. “What’s wrong with this, Ash?” he questioned, pulling his cheeks with his fingers. “I believe I’m born with a gorgeous face that’s able to attract girls. I’m a magnet, Ash, a girl magnet!”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re far from that, Ryan.”

“Please, please, please,” he begged. He was almost at his knees. “Just one tip!”

Exasperated, I faced him with a straight face. My mouth was about to spell out the usual normal guide to dating, but then, another memory came to me. I remembered what happened last night, how Cinder cried when I brought her to our usual park. She used to miss Mason. She used to miss me. Now, she had given up on me. The thought of me made her cry for nights.

“Tip number one: show care. Never leave her, ever. Don’t make her cry every single night for you.” A sad smile formed on my lips. Ryan recognized that look and tapped my shoulders. He understood that I have had an experience with it.

“Hey,” Ryan said. “That’s a good tip. When I get Josephine to like me back, I’ll protect her, forever.”

That made me relax. “Good,” I stated. “And what happens when a Victoria Secret model ask you out for a date?”

Ryan blinked, perplexed. He looked at his fingers and stared at it.

“Which one would you choose? Josephine or the model?”

“Is that really important?” Ryan asked.

I nodded. “It’s important to make yourself think that your girl is the best among all. Don’t let another girl make that crush for your girl to quiver.”
