Chapter 30—It was ALL IN MY HEAD

Ash

She wouldn’t stand beside me, eat beside me, or even sit beside me. Her mouth twitched when she saw me, wanting to say something, but then decided to give up her try. I scowled at myself for revealing the truth that quickly. It must have been very hard on her. One second, she knew me as Ash, and in the next, she knew me as someone else, someone who hurt her years ago.

When we got into the taxi, Cinder quickly pulled Andrew’s hand. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Andrew’s eyes brightened as Cinder dragged him into the backseat of the taxi. Shaking my head at her ridiculous slash childish action, I took the front seat next to the driver, the only seat left inside the taxi.

Silence drowned us as the taxi drove towards the airport. To break the awkwardness, Cinder began talking casually with Andrew. I tried to get into the conversation, but she managed to brush me off with the cold shoulder. This was getting to my nerves, and I kept my lips in a thin line all the way to the airport.

“Home sweet home,” Cinder said as she laughed with Andrew. Their hands were inseparable. They were busy with their own conversation in their own world. Uncaring of their own luggage, I stupidly appointed myself as the luggage-man of the day. Yes, I dragged their luggage around the airport as they continued to chat.

Gosh, such a painful punishment.

When we got into the plane, Cinder took the seat right next to the window, like the usual. I chuckled as she tightened her seatbelt and began looking out the small window. What made me immediately frown was when she stopped looking through the window and gestured Andrew to sit beside her. Andrew smiled and said, “Excuse me,” as I pushed the luggage into the compartments above us.

In reality, I wanted to be angry and annoyed. I was brave enough to conquer my own fears to tell her. My head spun as I tried to protect her in all ways possible. But now, she’s shrugging me off, ignoring me before I could tell her my reason for leaving her years ago. This is my perspective. I wondered what her perspective was, but I could guess that she was suffering more than me.

For that reason, I remained quiet, although longing for her company.

My eyelids began to flutter, and I was about to close my eyes to sleep when Andrew tapped me. I glared at him when he told me he was going to go to the bathroom. He passed me as I got up from my seat, giving room for him to walk out. Andrew was taking forever to return. Now, it was just us.

“Cinder?” I called softly.

She instantaneously closed both her eyes, pretending to sleep.

“I know you’re not asleep,” I called her. I sat on Andrew’s seat and looked at her. “Open your eyes. We need to talk.”

Her eyes were still shut. “I don’t want to talk now. Please give me time to process everything in.”

“Hey, you should listen to me first. There’s a reason why I left without a reason years ago,” I continued on.
