Chapter 28—We are TITANIUM
Ash
I heard them screaming at me to wake up and walk into the car. But the agony had not left me. I was not sure if it would ever leave me at all. As Nathan’s men dragged me into the car, I said nothing and continued to close my eyes. The tears had not stopped rolling down my face. Pain was evident in my facial expression, and I continued to mourn for my losses. All the energy was drained away from me. I found no other reason to live my life.
“Get over it!” Nathan screamed, frustrated and angry. He banged the car dashboard in disgust of my attitude. His men flinched, but I gave him no response. Nothing in this world seemed real anymore. Opening my eyes, I stared at Nathan’s blurry appearance as my eyes started to adjust inside the car. The dizziness in my head made me unfocused and unsteady.
My dry lips were cracked, bleeding. I realized my eyes were bloodshot. My wrist ached as the cuff dug deeper into my skin. The pain was eating me alive. For a moment, I chuckled inwardly. This pain I was handling was barely bearable. What kind of pain did Mom and Sierra experience?
Twice the pain?
Three times the pain?
Definitely worst than mine.
Exasperated of my silence, Nathan grabbed my hair and banged my head on the window. When I was not responding, he slapped me hard. “Look at me!” Nathan demanded. I didn’t do what he asked. After repeatedly trying to torture me and failing, he gave up and left me breathless.
Finally, he decided to leave me alone. The driver drove the huge car. I was not sure where I was going. Wherever it was, I wished that this car would bring us to hell, any place where we could be eaten alive. We deserved worst than that.
But I was the worst of them all. I was the worst son any parent would want to have. The treatments Nathan gave me were too nice, gentle. He should’ve just punched the life out of me and burn me alive. I deserved worst for bringing my family into danger. I deserved nothing for killing too many lives that I couldn’t even count with my own fingers.
Before I knew it, the car stopped. After throwing several warnings at me, Nathan got out of the car and entered the building in front of the car. As soon as he was out, the car was locked back. All his men were staring at me like I was going to attack them the moment Nathan was gone. They must be surprised when I did nothing at all. Instead of fighting, I leaned into the padded cushion of the seat and closed my eyes again.
Then, slowly, I began to break like a cracked shell. More tears ran down my face. I screamed inwardly and began to throw my head against the window, trying to hurt myself. Nathan’s men were quickly alert. They grabbed my shoulders and threatened me.
“One more movement, and I’ll shoot!” one of them threatened. I didn’t bother looking at him. Slowly, a grin crawled up my face. Curling my hands into fists, I looked up and challenged him with the best angry look I could muster. True, I was angry, upset, depressed, and at a loss. But I was also far from that. I was becoming crazy, self-destructive, and paranoid.
With the tears still running down my face, I replied, “Shoot. Shoot me.”
The man stiffened. The answer I gave him was not what he expected. Most hostages would shut up at this, but I was not one of them. “W—what?” he said, unable to believe what he was hearing.
