Chance
When we arrived back home Ruth didn't go straight to her room, which is a change.
It was only like 5pm so I kicked off my shoes and called Stacy, my girlfriend.
"Hey babe, what's up?"
"Chance! Hey! I've been calling you all day! Where've you been?"
"Just out."
"Where out?"
"The movies."
"With who?"
"A friend."
"Oh yeah! Your new roommate's arrived, hasn't he?"
"Um, yeah she has..."
"That's awes- wait, she?"
"Yeah..."
"WHAT?! You're sharing an apartment with a GIRL?!"
"Listen, babe she's just a friend. Okay? Trust me."
"How do I know?"
"Because I love you, and only you."
"Whatever. I'm coming over RIGHT NOW."
"There's n-"
And just like that she hung up.
There was no point in warning Ruth. She never listens to me anyway. I chuckle as I remember yesterday with Max.
Ruth comes into the living room from the kitchen and sits on the couch and turns on the TV.
Ruth has a certain look to her. An innocent girl-next-door look, unlike Stacy. Stacy's more like a glamorous rich girl who stomps on anything in her way. But I have to admit, I do love her.
"Hey Ruth, wasn't today fun? We should do that again sometime." I tried to talk to her but as always she doesn't even look at me.
Except today she did... twice.
Does that means she's making progress?
Because of me?
I look at her once more, her eyes sparkling in the sunlight from the window. Her dark hair pulled back into a ponytail swaying from the AC. I wonder if she's ever done any modeling. Stacy has, when she was like eleven but she stopped after a while.
I focus back on Ruth, she reminds me of a pomeranian for some reason. She keeps a poker face on all the time but I know she has feelings inside. I just know.
BANG BANG BANG
Stacy's here...
I sigh and open up the front door
"Hey St-"
She barges past me before I even finish my sentence. I follow her into the living room and she just stares at Ruth expecting her to look up.
"Babe, she's not going to look at you."
I tap Stacy on the shoulder but she huffs at me
"What, she's scared?" She scoffs and goes to sit next to her
"She just doesn't look at people I guess." I sit on the couch opposite them to keep and eye on what's going on.
"Hey! Hello! Anyone there?!" Stacy claps her hands in front of Ruth's face but she doesn't even blink.
"Stacy... enough." I challenge my girlfriend as she glares at me
"What? You're sticking up for her now? I haven't even done anything!" She turns back to Ruth and continues
After a few seconds she starts to get on my nerves and probably Ruth's. Maybe even hurting her feelings.
"STACY. ENOUGH." I stand up as I imagine Ruth upset, my face red causing Ruth to flinch and Stacy to stare at me. To me Ruth just seems like an unknowing bunny, who needs protecting. I guess that's why I felt the need to stop Stacy, but Stacy can't know what.
Seeing Ruth even show a bit of fear made me sit straight back down.
"Sorry... I just... I don't know." I was aiming the apology at Stacy but for some reason I was just looking at Ruth.
It's just
I don't know if Ruth can handle college on her own. I mean, college is a hard place. My older sister barely made it out of there alive (not literally) and she was like any other young adult.
"Whatever. She seems harmless anyway. Rude much, but harmless." Stacy starts to leave and I realise something.
Stacy doesn't know she's mute.
I run out of the room to catch her before she leaves and fill her in.
"Look, she's mute Stacy. She's not being rude."
"She couldn't at least look at me?"
"She has a problem with communication and showing her feelings."
"How do you know all of this anyway?"
"I've been living with her for about three days now Stacy.
"Oh... fine. Bye anyway, I'm meeting someone."
I wave her goodbye and go back into the living room to sit next to Ruth.
"Sorry, my friends are really weird - huh?" I try to explain
Somehow I can't see any trace of offence in her eyes so maybe she didn't even care.
"I'll be heading off to bed now. See you in the morning? First day of college!" I grin at her expecting her to look up at me at the mention of college but nothing.
I push myself of f the couch on get settled into bed.
