Ruth

That night, Chance stays with me for a while and we talk.

"So, do you know where you got up to? On that seven stages thing?"

I look down at the sheet he's holding with the seven words on it. He catches me looking at 'Acceptance'.  His eyes were the shade of acorns, just bright enough to shine in the shadows. I often kept my gaze to the ground or else tilted upward to the sky, but when I was brave enough to meet them a shiver of golden light would race down my spine, every time, every time.

"Acceptance, huh? I had a feeling it would be that one."

He moves closer to me on the couch and clasps his hand into mind. Our fingers entwining as he gives me a reassuring smile.

"Listen, Ruth. Accepting a loved one's gone just means learning to live without them. Trust me, your dad wouldn't have wanted you to live in suffering for the rest of your life. It may feel like you're betraying him or something if you move on but when you do move on - he'll move on too."

Chance

When she met my gaze, I felt drawn into her eyes. The icy blueness generated a feeling like I was being pulled into a lake of frozen emotions. It was like all the myriad shades of blue swirled together to form a whirlpool of apprehension. I could tell by her body language that she's happy I said that, and those flickering azure orbs confirmed my thoughts.

"Tomorrow, we're doing something else. Then we're going to see Debora again." I cut off the gaze and get up

I know the difference between wanting someone and needing someone, but I need and want Ruth - at the same time. But, it's hard to not be with her all the freakin' time. I've not asked her about y'know, going steady yet. I don't know when I even should, I think I'll just sense it I guess.

I wave goodbye to Ruth and leave her building.

Ruth

I think Chance wants to say something to me, but it's like he's never got the chance or he's afraid of something.

Dang it.

I knew I was weird but come on! I'm not scary.

I'm kidding. But I really wanna know what's going on in his head. I really want him to move back in too. I want loads of things but I can't even tell him.

Chance

I get to Ruth's apartment around midday when I see her sitting in the bathroom in front of the mirror with a pair of scissors.

"Hey... what're you doing?"

I go up behind her and smile at her through the mirror. She looks up at me and hands me the scissors.

"What?" I look down at the basin and see a magazine of hairstyles.

"You want me to cut your hair?" All she does is hand me the magazine and takes her hair out of the bun.

It falls effortlessly on her shoulders in a shiny, black avalanche of waves.

She straightens her back and waits for me to proceed.

"I've never done this before. You really shouldn't trust me, it's better if you do it yourself." I try and hand her back the scissors but she doesn't take it

I sigh and run my hands through her hair, smooth. Like a waterfall. I only just realized what she wanted to do.

"You want to cut your hair? It's already so beautiful, though."
