Chance

I remember the wedding like it was just yesterday.

Before the ceremony, the park was filled with people. Some who we didn't even know, you know those people - those brothers of cousins of goldfishes' old owner's ex-girlfriend. Those guests. But, nothing could dampen my mood. All my closest friends were there - Chaz, a couple guys from college, Stacy and even Max. My parents were there, my sister was there. Ruth's whole freaking family came, Riley, Ruth's old neighbors. I think she definitely beats me in the competition we started to see who has the most guests.

When the ceremony finally started, I was practically swimming in sweat as Ruth walked down the aisle. The sight of her made me stop breathing. The looked stunning, I don't think I can put into words how she looked. Maybe a visual will help, imagine an angel, wearing a ballgown, then the fairy godmother did her bib-idi bob-idi stuff, then she was touched by god. There you go, then Ruth was born.

She walks up to me and I so almost want to run away, contemplating on whether I'm good enough for her. Bt, she draws me in.

Before I know it, the pastor starts speaking.

Until I hear:

"Do you, Chance Parker, take her, Ruth Jemison, to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

The words slip out of my mouth out of instinct, "I do."

"And do you, Ruth Jemison, take him, Chance Parker, to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

"I do."

At that second, something clicks inside of me.

Like, it's been waiting to become right for my whole life. And then hearing Ruth say those words made me complete.

I think I'm done for life.

======================================================================

It's been two years since that amazing day.

Ruth and I moved to the suburbs closer to Sienna but not exactly the same neighborhood which is good.

But, the most amazing thing is that Ruth wrote a book - about selective mutism called 'Choice to Speak',  New York Times Bestseller #1.

We've earned loads of money and some may even say we're quite well-off.

Well, anyway - today we're having a family barbecue. And friend barbecue.

Ruth's out and I'm home alone... well, not completely alone.

I go upstairs to the little room at the end of the corridor.

"Hey there, my little Hana."

I pick up the light of my life and cradle her in my arms.

Yes, my daughter - Hana.

Pronounced Ha-na

Like how you would say Hannah.

Ruth had her a few months ago, the pregnancy was hard - I'll admit it. But Ruth and Hana was worth it.

I hear a soft knock at the door and I see Paul, Ruth's sister's husband.

"Hey! Come on in!" I pat his back as he walks into the house followed by the three troublemakers.

We have Elliot, Ethan and Eric - the triplets.

Not log after, pregnant Sienna comes strolling in.

"Hey Sienna! How's the second round doing?" I say, motioning to her stomach

"9 months! Anytime now." She crosses her fingers and beams at me and we hug

I lead them into the garden and the triplets who are now two years old play with the sticks near our large oak tree.

I chat with the couple until I hear another knock at the door.

There stands Riley and her boyfriend, Hans.

"Hey, you two!"

We all chat while we wait for the others to come.

Next there's Max and Stacy, with their little boy - Zack.

Chaz and Maggie - happily married too.

Then finally, Ruth with the burger supplies.

"You took your time." I tease her as she shoves me in a playful manner then saunders into the garden with everyone.

I make the burgers and we all have a great time. We have these barbecues once a month and it's always so much fun. The kids play and the adults chat, about college, about children.

Just like old times.

Finally, it feels like home.

And I've learnt that home isn't just a house.

It can be something with a heart and two eyes.
