I'm Ruth.
I've never said that to anyone before.
Well, I've never said anything to anyone before.
You guessed it
I'm mute
Nobody's ever been able to read me
Nobody... until him...
I follow him into his car and we speed off towards... somewhere.
"I wanted to show you my favourite place in the entire world, and now's the perfect time. Look outside."
My eyes drifted to the horizon, the sky was pink and the sharp prongs of bare trees had ripped a hole in the clouds. Through the wound the colours of winter bled and burnt my mind
It was the most beautiful sunset I'd ever seen.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" He takes his eyes off the road for a second to look at me
I notice him pulling up at a beach that I've never seen before.
Chance
The instant I park, Ruth rushes out of the car. Guess she likes beaches. I get the basket out of the trunk of the car and join Ruth on the sand.
Ruth whispers into the breeze, her eyelids fluttering closed as she breathes in the briny aroma. Scrunching her toes, I can tell she feels the softness of the sand, still damp from the retreating tide. That's when I notice she's taken off her shoes. She wiggles as a shiver cascades down her spine and her eyes burst open. The sand blurs out in a blissful trance, the shore fading into liquid gold, vivid in the brilliant light. Her bright lips curve upward.
She bestows her gaze to the far off horizon, the flaring hues of the sun melting into the sky and ocean like a divine painting. The forever stretching sea is masked with an apricot colour, that beautiful umber flowing into turquoise. Through narrowed eyes she watches as each wave overlaps one another, sending the white bubbling crests descending, masking the shore with the transparent fading water.
It's a beautiful sight, she's a beautiful sight.
While she isn't looking, I set out the picnic basket to surprise her.
When I'm done I inspect it, I think it's good. Plates laden with cutlery, a delicious aroma coming from the home-cooked food including my own personal touch (Pop Tarts), however mostly my sister's doing.
Ruth turns around and her eyes widen.
"Surprise" She runs over and hugs me, nuzzling her head into my neck.
"Do you like it?" I ask, rubbing my nose against her hair.
I feel movement underneath my head until I realise... she nodded.
I instantly pull away.
"Ruth... you just nodded? That's fantastic!" I grin and she nods again
"It's coming so easy to you... wow."
She learns so quick, Jesus. Kind of suspicious actually.
Then a horrible thought comes to my head.
"Wait, Ruth... could you like nod and shake your head this whole time?"
She nods again, still smiling.
"And you just didn't?" I say it with more stern in my voice.
Suddenly, her smile fades - normally I'd stop at this point but this is serious. Instead, she doesn't answer.
"Wow! Seriously? You could nod and whatever all this time but you just chose to torture me like this?" I say, my face turning red
She looked down at the floor, like a toddler being told off
"I can't believe this..."
Out of anger, I kick the blanket and bury my face in my hands.
It's not too long until this story is finished but there's a few things I need to do. HOWEVER, don't worry because there IS a sequel. On my profile, called "I Dare You". You can read the prologue but I'll start that when this one is finished. I've written the prologue but it isn't published yet.
