One Month Later

Ruth

The rest of that night was a nightmare, I don't even want to get into details.

Let's just say, Chance hasn't talked to me in a month - no, it's not like last time when he completely moved out. He's still living here, he's just being so much more hostile.

I don't understand, I thought he did his research on selective mutism - I thought he knew I could do things all along.

Oh, well. Maybe he just needs some time?

Anyway, I get ready for school and hope to see Chance in the morning.

But I don't.

I get to school and meet Riley at the entrance.

"Rough weekend? I know that look." She links her arm in mine and we both walk in

I give her a face saying "It's refreshing having you here."

She understands and gives me a smile

"To do with Chance by any chance?"

I smile and nudge her at her stupid pun.

"What? Come on... that was clever. You can't lie."

She laughs and I smile along with her

Riley always makes me feel better after a hard episode

The school day passed by in a blur, and I was hoping to not go home.

As I'm leaving with Riley, Sienna runs up to me in her jacket.

She must've just finished her last class."Hey, Ruth! Are you doing anything right now? You need to come over, it's really important."

I nod at her and she looks at me as if I've just grown two heads

"Um... we'll talk about that later. Just, come on! Sorry Riley..."

Sienna drags me into her car and drives off. 

She talks to me about work, and Paul and how psyched she is to tell me this thing.

We arrive at her and Paul's house and I notice that Mom's there too.

This must be big to get her in town for this.

Sienna takes off her jacket and leads me into the living room where Paul's entertaining mom.

"Okay, sorry to drag you out of town mom and to drag you - Ruth, out of... your evening. But, we've got something to tell you."

"Go on..." Mom says with an apprehensive face

"Paul and I... are getting married. We're engaged!" Sienna squeals and Mom jumps off of the couch to join in with her little celebration

"What?! When did this happen?!"

Mom, Sienna, and Paul discuss things and I just stay where I'm sat.

They're getting married? I mean, Paul isn't so childish anymore but I still don't think he's deserving of Sienna... but if Sienna loves him?

Well, if I was getting married to Chance and someone said he wasn't deserving of me I wouldn't listen to them probably. I guess it must be the same for them?

Oh man, the picture of me and Chance getting married pops into my head.

I think I need some water.

My thoughts get interrupted when I hear this phrase:

"...and I want Ruth to be my Maid of Honour."

I hastily look up at them then grin widely.

Sienna holds her hands out for a hug and I obey.

I'm gonna be a Maid of Honour!

"Okay, okay guys... there's one more piece of news." Paul looks at Sienna and she gives him an "Oh!" face

"So... Paul and I have been... trying. And I took a pregnancy test yesterday. I'm positive!" 

More squealing.

I'm going to be an aunt... oh my fudge.

What do aunts even do?

They give money on birthdays right?... or are those grandmas?

Oh god, well at least I have nine months to think about this.
