Chapter 4

■■

For about a week or so I stayed with Guy at the Manor. He bought me fancy fabrics and had them made into dresses. Guy also bought me books. So while he was away at the castle, I would sit on the window bench and read. Sometimes, he would take me to the castle. Guy's been nothing but good to me. He even convinced the sheriff to not kill me for almost taking one of his deer. Over the few days, I've been with Guy... We've grown close. I learned to deal with him and the pain that was caused. While he learned to deal with my stubbornness.

"Lunch is ready," Martin shouted from downstairs.

I set down my book and traveled down. Martin and the other servants had cooked up ham, bread, and ten other foods for lunch. Afterwards, I excused myself and went back upstairs to finish reading.

I finished the book right as Guy walked up the stairs.

"Evelyn, have you moved from that spot?" He questioned with a bit of laughter.

"I have. I ate lunch." I told him, setting the book down and getting up.

Guy plopped some books on the bed. "I brought you some more."

I gave him a sweet smile. "Thank you," I said, giving him a hug, but it was awkward because I was too short. "Have you heard anything about my cousin?" I asked, looking at the new books.

Guy let out a tired sigh. "He's killed a tax collector."

I turned my head and gave Guy a stern look. "My cousin would never do that." I turned back to the books and picked one up.

"Can I ask you something?" Guy asked, completely ignoring my angry words. "Did you love him, Allan. The man that was in the cell next to you."

The book fell out of my hands, hearing Guy say Allan made a sudden sad blanket cover me. I didn't know what to say but I opened my mouth anyway.

"He... he was, um. Well, he was, ah, a friend. Since I knew him for a short while... I think, ah, loving him would have been too, um, early." I awkwardly fixed the book and put it back like nothing happened. "For me, it takes time to love someone."

I made way over to the closet and grabbed out a cloak. "I need some air. I shan't be too long."

Then I left, leaving Guy in a confusing cloud.

I was on my horse, trotting through the forest just amazed by how beautiful it was to look at the sun trying to shine through the trees. To watch the leaves swiftly fall to the ground. To hear the soft rain fall leaf to leaf. To laugh at the birds chasing each other in the sky. It was lovely to gaze at while it warmed my heart.

"Nice legs." A cocky sounding voice said from the side of the pathway.

I looked over and saw Allan leaning on a thick tree with his arms crossed.

"I mean the horse." He corrected himself in a joking manner.

Swinging my left leg over and got down. "Very funny."

"What?" A childish grin slid across his face. "I'm not being funny, but.... you should dress like a girl more often."

I walked over and gently shoved him. "Shut up. Where's Robin?"

"I'll show you," Allan said, walking up a small hill. "Careful, it's a bit slippery from the..."

I slipped and fell down the hill before Allan could finish talking.
