Chapter 5
■■
Something came up at the Treeton mine. It is very unstable; unsafe for the men to work in it.
Since Guy agreed to take me with him, I rode on the back of his horse.
There the men were sick, injured, or dead. Guy got down and as did I.
A man with grey hair was standing a few feet from Guy started to raise his voice. "I will not go down there again." The man shouted. His voice struck with fear.
Guy didn't like that the man was standing up to him. "You will do as I say." He coldly ordered.
"My brother's dead." The man replied.
I looked over and saw a dead body, assuming that it was his brother. I scrunched my nose at the site.
"And your behavior suggests that you wouldn't care to join him," Guy answered.
The man would not give up. "We're on strike. 'Til he showed a proper burial, we're not going to mine down that death pit of yours again."
Guy got closer to the old man. I suppose to try and show off his manliness.
Suddenly, the sheriff came riding up, got off his horse and went over to Guy. I leaned over to the guard that was holding the horses.
"Do you like your job?" I asked in a quiet manner.
"I don't mind it. It comes with perks." He answered. His voice thick and gravelly.
"Hmm." I leaned back to normal, just as I saw Guy stab the old man. "Guy!" I breathed and rushed over to him.
"Bury this man. His family shall pay for the grave. They will not work. They will not be fed until I see fit. Anyone giving them assistance will hang." His words were cold like ice. His eyes were dark. "You're all sacked. Go home!"
When Guy turned, I knelt down by the boy who was holding the dead man in his arms.
"I'm very sorry for your loss," I said, handing him a small bag a money form my pocket.
I then quickly stood and ran after Guy.
"You're lucky I work with the sheriff." He softly spat.
"That was uncalled for. You know they can't pay. I just want to help."
"Well, helping can get you hanged."
"You do know... I have a choice. I could stay or I could leave." I made it clear that I was angered at the situation. "Do things like that again... I'll be heading off."
He clicked his tongue in doubt and went on his way.

Guy, the Sheriff, and I returned to the mine. I followed close behind them because I didn't want to be left behind. They were talking, but I didn't pay much attention to that. Mainly because I did not care.
There was a lot of crying. The Sheriff was complaining about the women and the way they cried. Then Guy looked back at me. I gave him a sincere smile, but his smile wasn't so sincere in return. It made me wonder what the sheriff was actually saying.
I was sitting on a table with Guy. The Sheriff was throwing rocks down a hole in the mine. Of course, complaining about being here. He never shuts up.
Guy stood up, crossed his arms, and walked closer to the sheriff. "My Lord, if you would prefer to go back to Nottingham, I'm happy to stay here and..."
