Chapter 26

■■

Guy and I were a happy family once more. He spent lots of time with Grace to make up the time they lost together. He also spent lots of time in the bedroom with me to make up for the fights we've been through. Guy was making up for everything that has happened. He told me how he killed the Sheriff. I was so joyous when my ears heard that. But the nonjoyous outcome is that Prince John is now in charge and he has no mercy for me as the Sheriff did.

While Guy was at work, I stayed home and took care of Grace. Betha wasn't around because of Rufus. The one day I left my baby with a servant, to go to Nottingham for cloth for my Grace, I come home to see Locklesy in flames. I threw all my stuff to the ground and ran to the manor. No one was there.

"Grace!" I screamed, running around the village. "Where is my baby!?"

A lady stopped me. "My lady, please, calm down."

I threw her arms from me. "Where is my child?"

"She was taken into the church. Prince John burned it while everyone was inside," she a sad with a sad voice.

I gritted my teeth. "What? Did they make it out?"

She shook her head. "I'm sorry, my lady."

Looking away, I tried to hide my tears. "No, no, this can't be." My lips quivered as I fell to my knees and began to scream.

Robin and his men came rushing in, trying to put out the fires. Allan says me on the ground and stopped to help me.

"Eve, what's wrong? Where's Grace?" He asked, helping me to my feet. I fell into him, causing Allan to catch me which made him worried. "Evelyn, what happened?"

I shrugged. "I was gone just an hour or so... I left Grace with the maid." I had to pause to take a breath. "I come home to find the village in flames and Grace was in the church." I looked up at Allan, but I could barely see him from all the tears in my eyes. "Allan, my baby is dead and I want here to save her."

Allan grabbed me tightly and gave me a squeeze. "I'm so sorry, Eve. I can't imagine what you're feeling."

Wrapping my arms around him, I held him as tight as I could and cried, soaking his shirt. After a little while, I looked up at him with soar eyes. "Prince John will pay for this!" I gritted my teeth as my sorrow turned into rage. "He will burn!"

Rushing into the Castle, pushing past the guards, demanding to see Guy. I found him conversating with one of the guards. So I grabbed his arm and pulled him away.

"Guy of Gisborne, we need to talk!" I grunted at him.

Guy looked at me funny. "About what? Where's Grace?"

"Why does everyone keep asking me that!" I cried, falling into his arms.

Guy held me close. "Evelyn, is everything alright?" He questioned nervously.

I shook my head. "Turns out that your new pal burned the church back at the village. The maid was inside with Grace... they didn't make it out alive."

"What?" His voice was stone cold.

"Prince John killed our daughter... And now I'm going to kill him." I muttered.

Guy pulled tight. "Now, Eve, let's not be too hasty. Prince John is our friend."

I pushed him away in anger. "Our friend? Is that what he said when he burned out daughter alive? Do you even care that she's gone?"

"Evelyn!" Guy shouted at me. "Don't you ever question my love for my daughter or yourself!"

I straightened myself out. "If you don't want me to question it then why is he still breathing!" I yelled back with gritted teeth.

Guy came closer, trying to calm me by running his hands over my shoulder. "My love, this is a touchy situation. He is about to make me Sheriff. Once I have the power, I will kill him myself, but we need to be patient."

I pushed him away. "That's not good enough. Why are you such a coward? Kill him now and we can run away together."

"Eve, please."

"No, Guy, you please. Our daughter is dead and you're willing to work for the guy that killed her. Guy, I love you, but if you're this much of a coward, scared to act. I cannot be here with you." My voice was broken. "I... I can't believe you... Allan would help me."

Guy looked at me with a stern eye. "Allan? Why would he help you?"

I rolled my eyes. "Why do you think? Allan was there for me when you were not."

Guy leaned forward and grabbed my arm. "Nevermind that, Evelyn, you can't leave me."

"Why not? What makes Prince John so different from all the other people you've killed? I mean, you killed Marian, a girl you really loved. Prince John killed our child and you're going to do nothing?" I pulled my arm back.

"Evelyn, please, just let me explain," Guy begged.

"No! Forget it. I'm not going to stay here whilst a murder walks around in good name. Continue to work for the man that killed our daughter. I can't be here anymore, which is why I'm leaving," I said with tears in my eyes.
