I stared at him angrily. "You just ran? And left him to the Minotaur?" Kade glanced back at Pygon and Nico before saying, "If we didn't, we would have all died. He wanted to save us." I slumped against the tree behind me. What Kade said was true, but I still didn't think it was right that they'd abandoned him. If I'd stayed conscious, I would've refused to leave him. Suddenly a blast of blue light hit me in the face. I scrambled backwards as far as could- which isn't very far when there's a tree behind you- to try and escape the blinding light. It flickered and became softer before my brother's face appeared in the middle of it.
"Josh," he said. I heard a sort of crackling noise in the background, but before I could ask he rushed on. "You've been betrayed. Other Slogurs are approaching as we speak. They want to kill you." I couldn't believe what he was saying.
"But it's against the rules to kill other contestants, Jack!" I cried. My brother stared at me.
"These ones don't seem to care," he said. I pulled myself up a little straighter.
"Is this- this traitor the reason Noah died?" I asked. Jack shrugged.
"For all I know, Noah was the traitor," he replied. I opened my mouth to reply when the crackling noise I'd noticed earlier turned into a roar. The last thing I saw before the message cut out was a burning beam of wood fall from our house roof and hit the screen, destroying the broadcast.
