I actually had a good time with Tyler.
After we had watched the sunrise, we went to go get breakfast at this restaurant by the boardwalk. And we just talked, something I rarely did without a cigarette hanging out from my mouth.
I cracked on Tyler for eating eggs with ketchup. I know that a lot of people did that but it would always be weird to me. He just teased me back, telling me that it tasted much better than the smoke that I put into my lungs everyday.
We talked about school. We talked about lacrosse. He had a big game coming up next Friday. I had to promise him that I was going to come.
He drove me home, letting me decide what music we would be listening to. I picked an upbeat song. One that made Tyler dance a little in his seat. He was a horrible dancer, but it made me laugh.
Everything was going fine until we pulled up into my house to see the rusty pickup truck sitting in my driveway.
"No way," I murmured.
"What is he doing here?" Tyler asked.
"I don't know," I admitted.
Mason wasn't outside, which meant that he was inside the house. Probably in my room. I was just relieved that Ned and Robin weren't home.
I got out of the car. Tyler followed. This time, I didn't yell at him to get lost. I just let him follow me into the house. I actually let him follow me all the way up to my bedroom.
Just like I had predicted, I found Mason in my room. He was sitting on my bed, smoking a cigarette. When he saw me enter, a smile washed onto his face. It only wavered a little when he saw Tyler following behind.
Still, he looked happy.
"Chloe hey," he greeted in an upbeat voice. He got up from the bed and hugged me. I, of course, hugged him back.
"Mason!" I cried, still not over the fact that he was in my house. "Hey! Um, what are you..."
"I missed you," Mason admitted as he let go of me. "Chloe, I really needed to see you. Last time I saw you, you were lying in a hospital bed telling me that everything was going to be ok. I know that you need your space but..."
I hugged him again, cutting off his words. I really had missed him.
When I let go, I saw that relief had spread onto his face. He was still smiling. "I'm glad you still like me."
"Of course I do," I sighed. "I just needed to get away for a little while. I was thrown back into a pretty dark place."
"I know," Mason informed. "And I feel awful about it. I should not have been driving so fast, especially after all you have been through with cars."
I didn't say anything. I just gave a little nod, hoping that he would take that as forgiveness.
Mason moved his eyes over to Tyler, who was standing by the door with his hands shoved in his pockets.
"And thank you man," he said to Tyler. "You've helped me and Chloe out so much. I really owe you one."
Tyler gave a little nod. "Yeah, no problem."
"Mason, I'm glad you are here," I told as I wrapped my arm around his waist. "But you need to leave. I don't know where Robin went. And I don't know how long she'll be gone for. I don't want you to get caught."
