The next morning, Codie looks out the window and sees that the sun is out and shining. She knows it's going to be another beautiful day. She goes over to Buddy's crate and sees he's awake and wagging his tail. He whines, begging her to let him out and take him outside so he can do his business. Codie opens the crate and picks him up and puts his leash on and then takes him outside, where he relieves himself. Just then, Country comes running up and invites Buddy to play. Mekaila comes out and says good morning to Codie.
"So are you ready to pick out your puppy?" Codie asks her.
"Yeah! Of course! I was so excited last night that I could barely fall asleep." Mekaila tells her.
"Country really wants to play with him, but I can't let Buddy off the leash cause he'll run off."
"Let's put them in the dog run together, then."
Mekaila shows Codie where the dog run is and they put both dogs in there and they start running around and playing. Just then, they hear Mekaila's aunt call them in for breakfast and they head inside. They sit down at the table and start eating breakfast, which is waffles and bacon. After breakfast, they get dressed and brush their teeth and hair. Then, they say goodbye to Mekaila's aunt and get into the jeep.
"What kind of music do you want to listen to?" Mekaila asks Codie.
"Country please, that's my favorite kind of music." Codie replies.
"Mine, too." Mekaila says as she turns on the country station.
About twenty minutes later, they arrive at the shelter and hear dogs and puppies whining and barking. They sign in at the front desk and wait for a shelter worker to help them. They chat excitedly about the new dog and then text on their phones. After about ten minutes of waiting, their names are called and they are led into the kennel area by one of the workers.
"Look around and see if there's a dog in here meant for you. Let me know if you have any questions." The worker says, as she heads back to the front desk.
"What kind of a dog are you looking for?" Codie asks Mekaila, as they start looking at dogs of all sizes, colors, and ages.
"I don't really know, actually, I was thinking a Lab or Golden, but now I'm leaning towards an Australian Cattle Dog."
"Ok, let's see if they have one."
The girls go up and down the aisles in each of the rooms, looking at all of the dogs, chatting and enjoying themselves. Mekaila goes down the back of an aisle, while Codie goes down the back of another one.
Just then, Codie calls out, "Mekaila, come here!"
Mekaila comes over to where Codie is and asks, "What?"
"Here's a Cattle Dog mix."
"Awww, she's adorable." Mekaila falls in love with the young dog, who's only 8 months old.
"Is she the one?" Codie asks.
"This is the one. She's perfect!" Mekaila says, positively.
"Okay, I'll go get the worker." Codie goes and gets the worker, who brings the dog out for them to meet outside.
The pup runs around, barking, and then goes over to Mekaila and licks her face, making her laugh. She's definitely the one!
They go inside and fill out the adoption papers and then take the puppy with them. They drive back to the ranch and introduce their dogs to the puppy. Country sniffs the puppy and Buddy tries to play with her, but the puppy just sits there, watching the two dogs.
"We need to come up with a name for her." Codie says.
"Yeah, I know, let's take her inside and think of a name." Mekaila says, as she picks up the puppy.
"Okay, sounds like a plan." Codie says, as they leave, letting Country and Buddy follow them inside.
Country and Buddy try to follow the girls into the bedroom, but they block them and close the door on them. The puppy jumps on the bed, curls up, and falls asleep. The girls sit on the bed, next to the puppy. Mekaila pets her, softly on the back and puts her in her lap.
"She's so adorable!" Codie exclaims.
"Yeah, I'm in love already. I can't wait for many more years with her." Mekaila smiles at her new puppy.
"What do you think her name should be, though?"
"Hmmm.... how about Cowgirl?" Mekaila suggests.
"I love it!" Codie exclaims.
"It's perfect!"
