Chapter 21

Codie wakes up the next morning not feeling very well, she's very hot, has a headache, is coughing, and has a stomachache. Her dogs know she isn't feeling well, and lay as close to her as they can. Managing a tiny smile, Codie pets and kisses them. Then, there's a light knock on her door, startling her a little.

"Who is it?" She calls.

"Chris." 

"Oh, come on in."

He enters and immediately knows she isn't feeling well, "what's wrong?"

"You always know when I'm not feeling well or something's up, don't you? I've got a headache, my body aches, my very warm, and I've got a horrible cough." She then coughs.

"Oh dear, I'm so sorry, sis. I'll go tell mom and dad and get you some breakfast, cough drops, some medicine, some Kleenex, and a couple ice packs." Chris quickly rushes downstairs.

"Codie isn't feeling very well, sounds like she's got a fever and possibly, the flu." Chris tells his parents, coming into the kitchen.

"Oh dear." Lisa sighs.

Chris grabs some medicine, Kleenex, and ice packs for Codie and brings them back up to her, saying he'll be back with breakfast soon. Codie just sighs and lays there, sad and upset. Her mom comes up a few minutes later with a thermometer, and, sure enough, Codie has a temperature. She keeps the ice packs on for ten minutes, then takes them off for fifteen minutes and repeats this a couple times. Her mom brings up breakfast, which is eggs, hash, and toast. She eats a little bit, but not much, as he stomach is hurting her a lot. 

"Let me know if you need anything, sweetie." She says, sitting a walkie talkie on her nightstand, so Codie can reach her easily.

"I will, thanks mom." She says.

A few minutes into resting, Codie's phone buzzes and she sees it's a text from Parker, asking her if she wants to get together. Codie sighs and sends back, "I'd love to, but I'm sick, sorry."

Parker replies with, "Ah, I'm sorry babe, I hope you feel better soon."

"Thanks" Codie texts back.

Codie turns her T.V. on, but keeps the volume on low, watching it for a few minutes. Then, all of the sudden, she feels the urge that she has to throw up. She quickly goes into her bathroom, opens the toilet, and throws up. She then swishes with water in the sink and goes back to her bed. She grabs the walkie talkie and says, "mom?"

"Yes, sweetie?" Comes the reply.

"I just threw up in the toilet, so my stomach is a little better. But my head is throbbing. Can I have some Tylenol please?"

"Sure sweetie, I'll be right up."

A few minutes later, her mom returns with two Tylenol and a fresh cup of water. Codie takes the pills and thanks her mom. 

"Get some rest sweetie."

"I will, thanks mom."

Codie turns back to the T.V., but eventually drifts off to sleep.

Steve and Lisa are in their offices when there's a knock on the front door.

"I'll get it." Lisa gets up and heads to the door and opens it.

"Oh, hi, Parker. How are you doing?" She asks, as he stands on their front porch, a heart box and roses clutched in his hands.

"I'm good, Codie texted me that she wasn't feeling well, so I got her some get well gifts." He hands her the box and flowers.

"Oh, how sweet of you. Codie is upstairs resting, but I'll make sure she gets these."

"Thank you, tell her I said hi and I hope she gets better really soon."

"I'll do that, thank you. See you later."

He waves and gets back in his car and drives away.

"He's the sweetest guy ever, I think Codie should keep him." Lisa tells Steve, winking at him.

"He's a keeper in my book, too." Steve smiles at her.

It's about eleven o'clock and Lisa heads upstairs to check on Codie, and sees she's still sleeping. She quietly heads back downstairs and sees Chris putting his shoes on.

"Where are you off to?" She asks him.

"The skate park." He says, grabbing his skateboard.

"Alright, just be careful this time, would you? You scared us last time.

"I will, I will, don't worry." He says.

"I'm a mom, it's my job to worry." She says, giving him a hug.

"Be home before dark!" She calls after him, as he heads out the front door.

"Steve, what do you want for lunch?" Lisa asks.

"Hmmmm.... how about chicken noodle soup? It'll be great for Codie to have some." Steve tells her.

"Sounds good to me." Lisa starts to get out the ingredients.

About twenty minutes later, the soup is cooking on the stove and Steve keeps trying to get little tastes of it, but Lisa keeps stopping him. She gets out a roll of biscuits, pops them open, lays them on a sheet tray, and puts them in the oven.

At about noon, Codie wakes up to the smell of chicken noodle soup. Buddy and Clementine smell it, too, and head downstairs. Codie's head still hurts a little, but the coughing has mainly stopped, she's not as warm, and is just feeling a little more like herself again.

"Mom." She says through her radio.

"Oh you're awake, good, I'll be bringing up lunch soon." Her mom replies.

"Yum, sounds good." Codie replies, and her stomach grumbles in response.

She gets up and goes to the bathroom, washes her hands, and then comes back to her bed and lays down. 

About five minutes later, her mom brings up a tray, with a bowl of soup, a couple of biscuits, and a glass of apple juice. She smiles and immediately starts eating right away.

"Thanks mom."

"You're welcome, sweetie. Oh, I just remembered, I have something else for you. I'll be right back." She heads back downstairs.

Codie continues to eat her soup, dipping her biscuit in it.

Her mom comes back up, her hands hidden behind her back, "pick a hand."

Codie points to the left one and her mom reveals the roses and box of chocolates.

"Oh! Wow! I love them! Are they from Chris?" She asks.

"No silly, they're from someone else...." 

"Oh, from Parker, huh?" Codie quickly figures it out.

"Yes, of course, sweetie."

"Aww, he's so sweet." Codie says, as she smells the roses.

"I'll get a vase with water for those." Her mom says, as she heads back downstairs.

The flowers and chocolates cheer Codie up and she finishes all of her lunch, eating just a couple of the chocolates.
