"Oh my goodness, Mekaila!" Codie exclaims, as she gets in the bus and sits next to Codie.
"Well, isn't someone very happy?" Mekaila says, as she gets out her phone.
"Yes!!!! So last night Parker took me to the movies and for ice cream! It was awesome!"
"Well that's great! I spent the whole weekend sick." Mekaila says as she looks at something on her phone.
"Yeah, sorry. What's wrong?" She notices tears have started falling down Mekaila's cheeks.
Mekaila looks at her and cries even more and Codie wraps her arm around Mekaila in a tight hug. She looks at her phone and noticed its from Mekaila's aunt. The messages talk about having to take Country to the vet, because she got hit by a car. Codie frowns and a few tears start trickling down her cheeks, too.
"I'm so sorry, Kaila, I hope she'll be alright." Codie gives her friend another huge, comforting hug.
"Thanks, she means so much to my aunt and I. I don't know what we'd do without her." Mekaila says, between sobs.
"I'm sure she'll pull through, she's a tough dog." Codie tries to remain calm and comfort her.
"I hope so, my aunt said her ribs might be broken or fractured, though."
"Oh, well that's not good. How'd she get in the road, anyway?"
"My aunt said that she saw a rabbit and took off after it. A car was coming and, before it could stop, it hit her. The person driving the car did get out, though, and helped my aunt put Country in her car." More tears come rolling down her cheeks and Codie hands her tissues and hugs her more.
"Oh dear."

Mekaila's aunt comes to get her, at lunchtime, and she leaves, saying a depressed good-bye to Codie. Codie wishes her the best of luck and this makes her smile, a little bit. Codie heads back to class and Mekaila leaves with her aunt. Codie can't focus the rest of the day, though, and struggles through the rest of her classes. Parker meets up with her between 6th and 7th period and notices, right away, that something's wrong.
"What's wrong, Codie?"
"Nothing." Codie doesn't feel like talking about it right now.
"Codie, I know you and I know something is wrong, so you better tell me." He's very persistent.
"Look Parker, I have to get to class." She tries to get past him, but he steps in front of her.
"Parker!" She gives him a small glare.
"I'm not moving until you tell me what's wrong." Parker stands his ground.
"Fine." Codie sighs.
"Okay, out with it."
"Alright, so Mekaila's aunt's dog, which is also her dog, Country, got hit by a car this morning and had to be taken to the vet. She might have broken or fractured ribs and she might not make it." Tears start streaming down Codie's cheeks.
Parker immediately envelopes her in a huge hug and talks quietly and calmly to her. This calms her down right away and she, of course, hugs him back.
